Really interesting Ed, I used to repair CD players for a living, and the problem on the fragility of the silvered side was known about way back in the 80's, but the problems of de-laminiation of DVDs is a new one to me. Best advice is (and has always been) treat your storage medium carefully.

Data on CD's I burned years ago is still fine despite being on unbranded stock. However music cd's I burn for use in the car last about 2 months but of course they just get tossed on a big pile on the passenger seat.
