Sometimes I have luck with the Art History Brush, sometimes not...
I thought this was one of the better tutorials I've seen on this Photoshop tool: http://www.wacom.com/tips/tip.cfm?ID=93&STEP=1&category=Photoshop
For other Art History Brush tutorials, check this post:

From Adobe Evangelists...
I learned a couple things that I didn't know before and got some new ideas from this one:

This second one is based on the AHB introduced with Photoshop 5.5. A few settings have changed since then, but there's still good info on the rest.

Note: It may load kind of s-l-o-w...

The final step to Emboss was a bit overdone, but I liked the images and screenshots used to supplement the text. You might try to apply a little Unsharp Mask instead of Emboss.
Suggestions:
* Use "Tight Long" for least detail and "Tight Medium" and "Tight Short" for more detail.
* For most detail use the "Daub" setting.
* I have much better luck with AHB if I use fairly small brush diameters. On the attached example I used 10 pixels when the "Tight Long" setting was in effect and 2 pixels when "Tight Long" and "Daub" were used.

Do you know where there are any Art History Brushes to download?
Check www.Trimoon.com (http://)
Don't know why I didn't mention Stephen's site before. He crafted some pretty nifty AHB presets (free).
