View Full Version : Creative Interpretations: Bird in the Surf (Fluff) Fluffbutt 06-04-2004, 11:51 PM I found a book on painting. It has photographs which the author used (along with the real life scene) to paint an image. So it shows the real scene, and his interpretation of it.
I've scanned one page to post here, we can try out our technniques on it, and see if we produce realistic artwork, or if it stays looking 'computerized'.
I'll scan and post his resulting image after a week or so. Excuse the moire. You can fix if you wish, but it's not important to the end results.

However, you used the term 'knocked up', which here means to get one pregnant. Perhaps you meant 'knocked out'? I'm afraid you left yourself wide open on that.

LOL!!! Xaran 06-05-2004, 09:44 AM My interpretation.
Christine Cheryl H 06-05-2004, 10:31 AM Fluff--nice job knocking up the pic :lmao: Seriously--I really like the stroke effect in the waves
Christine--edge treatment was a good idea (and one I tend to forget)
I went with the cymk masking combined with impressionist I've been using lately and borrowed a few tips from trimoon's latest tutorial--used several layers and used masks (rather than erasing) to have variable amounts of the the different layers showing. The dodge (and another burn) layers seemed to add quite a bit of oomph to the image. Topped it with a canvas glaze (another trick snagged and modified from an earlier Trimoon tut). Since the black channel didn't retain a lot of detail in this particular image, I reduced the opacity of the bottom layer to let a little of the original show through to return some detail to the image. I'm fast. It only took me 7 minutes to knock this one up. Wasn't very satisfying for the egret though.
Grabbed the weak black CMYK channel, pumped up the levels, copied and pasted back into original.
Added curves adjustment layer to boost contrast.
Added 15% Noise
Blue Color Overlay, Faded Back

Cheers
Dave Fluffbutt 06-05-2004, 07:25 PM Very good work, all of you.
I particularly like Xaran's - it looks very "Old Master"-ery style. Rembrant, or Michelangelo? (I made a lovely Imp. style that does an OM image, anyone want it?)
(That's not to say I like than one more than you others - it just stands out because it has that OM look) LOL bigkidjr 06-06-2004, 10:41 PM I used a combo of brightness/contrast (to increase some of the details), vp pastel faded over orig, light buzz, healing brush for touching up, added a horizon and a bit of sunset, and texture. Oh, and some very light find edges.
bk Patricia 06-06-2004, 10:43 PM bk, this is really nice.
Patricia Cheryl H 06-06-2004, 10:52 PM Wow bk--that is gorgeous. DigitalDevo 06-06-2004, 10:56 PM My attempt using my Painter Action Set.. Had to reduce size a bit and save in not so good quality in order to keep it within file size limits for upload :( bigkidjr 06-07-2004, 10:38 AM thanks, guys. every once in a while, you stumble onto something that works pretty good... : ) DannyRaphael 06-09-2004, 09:10 AM Fluff:

Big...
Let me jump in late with some well deserved applause. The addition of the horizon/sky was brilliant. Just a great effect overall.

~Danny~ Fluffbutt 06-09-2004, 10:18 AM Danny - that's a nice one there. i see you also outlined the bird.
In the book the painter said that it needed a dark outline to pull it away from the waves hilights. (That's also why I added one.).
This has been very interesting, seeing all the reponses. | |
