View Full Version : Saw Doug's cake printer DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 09:00 AM Hey Doug,
I was watching TechTV last night and saw that cake printer you mentioned in another post. I tuned in the middle so I didn't get the guys names but it was about 2 guys who tore apart an HP printer and reassembled it onto a frame work with a shelf like slot for the cakes to be put into. They then filled the cartridges with food dye and with the use of a scanner they print a fantastic picture on this cake. The quality is incredible. They've marketed this system to bakeries all over for a mear $10,000. I have to admit when you said someone was printing on cakes I couldn't picture it but this machine was pure ingenious. I can see a great potential in this idea. Wish I could invent like that.
DJ Doug Nelson 10-21-2001, 09:23 AM And you all thought I was nuts (but that could be another issue entirely) :) DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 09:31 AM All I could picture was someone trying to shove a cake through that little paper slot. Out comes a pretty picture on a smooshed cake.
As for you being nuts well you could start an opinon poll in the salon if you want. The results could be interesting. :D Trying to keep up this website and an online restoration site and business can seem a little nuts to some of us you included. :dizzy:
DJ Chris W. 10-21-2001, 10:04 AM Well I guess I was absent the day this subject came up...unbelieveable!!!
My curiosity got the best of me so I did a quick search in yahoo on printing on cakes and up pops the following link.

Okay now who's going to be the first one to try this one!
:) thomasgeorge 10-21-2001, 10:07 AM First printing on paper, now cakes! How long before cows? Is nothing sacred! Tom DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 10:09 AM The only difference was that this site prints on an edible rice paper and applies it to the cake but the one I saw prints directly on the cake and the photos are perfect picture quality. The site you found was actually the only way I figured you could do something like that before I saw this show last night. It was unreal.
DJ DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 11:22 AM Hey Tom
You may have something there. No more hot irons for branding cows. Just herd them into a tight stall where a printer puts indelible ink brands on there flanks. Not bad. If I were you, after seeing what these fellows are marketing their machines for, I would hurry to the patent office. :D
DJ thomasgeorge 10-21-2001, 11:26 AM Now that I'd pay to see!! How do you color balance and profile a bovine printer? Perhaps just go with sepia--except on the red ones! Tom DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 11:30 AM  Hey not only could you have a basic brand but you could also have the owners picture there on the cows flank too. You would have to color correct according to breed I guess. Lights and pastels for Black Angus and black and white for gurnseys. :D
DJ Chris W. 10-21-2001, 12:37 PM Wow DJ,
Wish I had seen that show...is there a website that shows this cake printing? DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 02:01 PM I'm not sure Chris. I will check it out and see what I can find. Maybe do a search on the show itself.
DJ DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 02:15 PM I found it Chris. Here's (http://www.techtv.com/freshgear/story/0,23158,3354565,00.html) the story on TechTV that I saw with a photo of the actual machine. And you can check out the actual site here (http://www.sweetart.com/). It really is a remarkable product.
DJ Doug,
I owe you an apology. I *did* think you were a little bonkers. :D But since Debbie is the only one who saw the show, how do we really know you didn't pay her to say that? :)
Tom,
I saw a steak at the market this morning that looked pretty bad. That wasn't one of your first color corrections for bovines, was it? If so, you got more work to do buddy. :D
Ed DJ Dubovsky 10-21-2001, 03:14 PM Now Ed, I did give proof, although if Doug wants to employ me that's ok too. :D
Click on those links in my previous reply. It really has to be seen to believe. :D
DJ That looks like a pretty nice way to put money in the bank! You can have your cake and eat it too! :)
Ed thomasgeorge 10-21-2001, 07:07 PM Steak??!!! Thats where cousin Grant went...I told him that wasnt a tour bus he got on!. Tom mediaase 10-31-2001, 07:09 AM Check your local Kroger to see it in action.....mine has one  DJ Dubovsky 10-31-2001, 08:08 AM I don't have a local Kroger. :( I haven't seen them in our grocery stores yet but I can see the potential. Have you seen it in action? You have to give us a run down on the quality and taste. Do the cakes cost about the same still? Just curious.
DJ mediaase 10-31-2001, 08:11 AM I haven't seen it in action, it was broke when I was there :D
Those cakes are only about 5-10 $ more though and the quality is really nice...I was quite surprised. It would take a LOT of cakes just to break even, but it's a neat idea. |
