Is there a tutorial available on backlighting? I am trying to get the amber effect of the setting sun as backlighting without creating too much of a halo around the subject. Should I introduce a layer in front of the background and behind the subject? I'm really kind of stuck here. Thanks for any help, hints or direction.

What I've done before is (as you say) mask out the subject in a duplicate layer, then add a glow between the original and duplicated layers.

The between layer can be a radial gradient (outer edge transparent), plus an inner-glow on the subject in the top layer. That's what I did here to accentuate the misty city background from the person...
