Can anyone tell me how this image was done and what programs was used.

THere are many ways to do anything, knowing the portrait photography industry this was probably done with Corel Painter and Photoshop

-Smearing of colors: Painter using the liquify brushes
-Rest done in Photoshop using layers to duplicate and shrink the new layer to create the inside image, layer blending options to create the glow under the top layer

How do I shrink the image? I do have Corel Painter 9, never played with it yet.

Do you have photoshop? If not, then I am not sure - but whatever you are using - including Painter - can probably do it too, just search the help files for layers and transform - transform is the command in photoshop you use to resize layers. In Photoshop if you double click on a Layer you will open blending options for the layer, where you can apply layer affects - these are all things that need to be played with so that you can make your own artistic judgements ...

These images could have been created using any imaging software that supports layers and effects, or so I suspect. You mentioned that you have Corel Painter 9 but hadn't played with it yet. Does that mean you don't have any experience with this type of software at all? If that is the case I don't think it is realistic to try and recreate an image that required a lot of experience (and experimentation, no doubt) to create.

Someone here could probably give you a step-by-step "recipe" to come up with a similar effect. But if you don't know how to use the software then it would be very difficult to follow along. It would be like trying to follow a complicated recipe for a cake when you had never been in the kitchen! LOL!

I'm not trying to discourage you, but to encourage you to open up Corel Painter, check out the manual or a good book and get a good background in how the software works before trying a difficult project. I'm sure there are some great tutorials that will help you build the skills you need!

If you have any problems once you start learning the software I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out! Good luck!

Here's my attempt to create a similar look/feel.

I'm using PS Elements 2 and Richard Lynch's book Hidden Powers.

I took a picture of a tiger which I had taken at the zoo.
I made a copy of the background and removed everything but the back half of the tiger and its head.
Then I created a new layer called "Red" and painted the red streaks.
I took the smudge tool at various sizes and intensities and drug around making the flames.
Then I created a new layer called "Orange" and painted the orange streaks.
Then I again took the smudge and drug around making the next level in the flames.
I then repeated it once more for yellow.
Then I took my image of the tiger itself and did the same kind of streaking. I used the eraser to blend the back of the tiger into the other colors.

I didn't create the inserted level, but thought this might give an idea about doing the affect.
