If I'm not mistaken I believe this type of engine is a "Hudson." Did some cropping, Photoshop Dry Brush and a few Impressionist layers on this one.

When I was a wee tyke I was a real train nut and envisioned someday growing up to become an engineer at the controls locomotives like this one. As I grew older I got into model trains (HO) and subscribed to model train mags where I learned a lot about locomotive models, railroad trivia, etc.

A few years later I got hooked on photography and started shooting pictures of trains (and other subjects). Now (many, many years later) I'm content with having other folks shoot the pix and take satisfaction of manipulating them. :)

What did you use for the simplification? Looks Buzzed, but if not, I'd be especially interested in the alternative method. You sure got a lot better detail in the locomotive than I did and the color work is outstanding.

Danny - I enhance the photo to where I got the best colors using a combination of curves and contrast adjustments. I then used amphisoft simpifier at a low setting (to create more edge detail) followed by buzz simplifier 3 with a setting of about 40 or 45 for all three areas (inner, middle and outer). Certain areas were painted in using penpalette (or use a mask), that is, track edges, etc.

Independent of how you got there (I don't have / never heard of most of those plug-ins) you really have captured the mood. As a piece of art that is the most important.
