I have been busy making montages lately. 150 Dpi is good for poster size and I have made one at 18x24" with 50+ shots and a 24x36" with 80 shots. This about maxed out my computer's memory. What confused me is the message that my scratch disk is full. I have 2 60 gig drives with 50 and 40 Gig free space respectively. So why is this message coming up?
I really don't understand what is going on here, If someone can explain the basics to me it would be helpfull. Right now I close a project after saving it to jpeg...or do whatever to make space.....Thanks.

"9. Optimize scratch disks.

Photoshop uses a scratch disk file--temporary disk space for storing data and performing computations--when insufficient RAM is available for image editing. Photoshop 7.0 can create unlimited scratch disk space on up to four hard disk partitions; Photoshop 6.x can create 200 GB of scratch disk space on up to four hard disk partitions.

The partition you specify as the first scratch disk should have free space equal to three to five times the size of the average image file; specify a second, third, and fourth scratch disk if you have additional hard disk partitions. If disk space is insufficient, remove unnecessary files from your hard disk(s).

To specify a scratch disk in Photoshop, choose Edit > Preferences > Plug-ins & Scratch Disks. "

OK... Informative, but not especially useful.

Is the 50-60 GB of free space available when Photoshop is running, when you get the "Scratch Disk is Full" message or after you shutdown Photoshop?

Is your scratch disk assigned to a disk other than C:\

I surfed Adobe.com for a while. Although this appears to be a fairly common problem, I found only one thread where someone with symptoms similar to yours (GOBS of disk space) solved it. He uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop. :(

As an alternative less drastic approach would be to delete your Photoshop preferences file and see if that helps. Check these:
