I got this old photo of grandmother... thing is it's old and the paper used has this texture to it. I'm not sure how I can remove all that pattern without spending hours on it ... sos... help..

I just started playing with PictureMan 5 Pro... Got all night to figure this one out... :)

There's often many different ways. Can you post the pic and perhaps we can determine what might work best.
One idea though is to overscan the image 300 to 400% and step the file down via Image>Image Size in 2 to 4 increments. Another is to scan several times and each time rotate the picture.

Since you have access to the original, scan it at a high resolution, turn the picture 180° and scan it again. Then line the second picture directly over the first one and set the top layer to darken. If they are lined up exactly, this will virtually eliminate the texture without losing much of the detail.

NICE! Will try that as well... It's X-Mas and all my family wants their photos fixed... so i'm looking for the quickest way... :)

Used a software called AstraImage. Its very easy with this s/w to remove such patterns. Used a feature called FFT Edit and masked out all the bright spots.

Like krishna, to remove the texture in this picture, trying not to lose too many details and sharpness, I used FFT which, in my case, is the FFT Plug-in for Phototshop (here (http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~avc25/archive.htm)).

Roland explained very clearly how to use it here (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showpost.php?p=76559&postcount=6).

After running the FFT filter, I copied and pasted the original picture on top of the grey corrected one and set the blending to Color to go back to the original colour.

I used Curves and Levels to balance lights, shadows and midtones.
I used the Blur Tool to selectively smoothen some areas.
I created a soft vignette to fade the background a bit and make the lady's face 'pop' out more.

That's excellent Flora.The tones are so good in the restored version.

great colouring!!! .... In my opinion, the restoration is a bit 'too' soft/blurred ... and, unless you wanted it that way ... I think too many details have been lost ...

well as I said I am VERY new to this..I normally do digital art..not editing pictures so..This is all very new to me...

You managed to remove the 'texture' very well ... maybe a bit too soft ... but that's my taste...
maybe it's only my monitor, but there seems to be a cyan/greenish cast and some green spots on her face and in her hair...

Using neat image and paint shop pro to get this one...

Thanx to all for the suggestions. I actually used multiple techniques on this one. First I had it scanned at 800dpi but no filters (or my computer) wanted to work it. I scanned the photo at 400dpi and that made a difference. I started with FFT but still some of the pattern remained. I think this is still due to the resolution. Couple of leyers with Neat Image and Gausssian Blur and masked out the eyes.. some face details... This took me several tries and some rum with coke... It looks a bit over saturated, what do you think?
Now I'm gonna have to play around to resize it for 5x7 print out... ya.. gonna be long night...

well using your new pic did a little more editing..see what you think?

face is too pale for my taste but i see where you're going with this... i'll try something here.... :robot:

I thought I'd take a crack at this. After using FFT, I ran Neat Image at moderately low settings and then faded back even more. The end result does have some sharpness to it but it also has a bit of texture in the background. Might be alright for a 5 X 7 but not sure I'd want to go any larger unless more time was spent blurring out the texture areas.
