I just started playing with PictureMan 5 Pro... Got all night to figure this one out... :) There's often many different ways. Can you post the pic and perhaps we can determine what might work best.
One idea though is to overscan the image 300 to 400% and step the file down via Image>Image Size in 2 to 4 increments. Another is to scan several times and each time rotate the picture.
Dave uturn 12-15-2004, 08:16 AM OK.. here is the pic... prolly too low quality, but it should give you an idea of what I'm dealing with.. Thank yuou for any suggestions.. chrishoggy 12-15-2004, 09:55 AM Deleted and leaving this forum due to the actions of member rondon (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/member.php?userid=366) uturn 12-15-2004, 10:16 AM OMG! Thank You!
I went over couple of different tutorials and was getting ready to work on it tonight, but what you've done is the quickest yet. This is great!
Thanx again! MBChamberlain 12-15-2004, 10:32 AM Since you have access to the original, scan it at a high resolution, turn the picture 180° and scan it again. Then line the second picture directly over the first one and set the top layer to darken. If they are lined up exactly, this will virtually eliminate the texture without losing much of the detail.
Take care,
Michael uturn 12-15-2004, 11:32 AM NICE! Will try that as well... It's X-Mas and all my family wants their photos fixed... so i'm looking for the quickest way... :) krishna 12-15-2004, 12:56 PM Used a software called AstraImage. Its very easy with this s/w to remove such patterns. Used a feature called FFT Edit and masked out all the bright spots. Flora 12-16-2004, 03:06 AM Like krishna, to remove the texture in this picture, trying not to lose too many details and sharpness, I used FFT which, in my case, is the FFT Plug-in for Phototshop (here (http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~avc25/archive.htm)).
Roland explained very clearly how to use it here (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showpost.php?p=76559&postcount=6).
After running the FFT filter, I copied and pasted the original picture on top of the grey corrected one and set the blending to Color to go back to the original colour.
I used Curves and Levels to balance lights, shadows and midtones.
I used the Blur Tool to selectively smoothen some areas.
I created a soft vignette to fade the background a bit and make the lady's face 'pop' out more. krishna 12-16-2004, 03:32 AM That's excellent Flora. The tones are so good in the restored version. uturn 12-16-2004, 07:18 AM WOW Flora, Thanx. That looks amazing...I'm just like... wow... right now.. nice! TokenArt 12-17-2004, 02:09 AM since just joined trying my hand at alot of these pics I guess..let me know what you think
TokenArt Flora 12-17-2004, 04:28 AM krishna, uturn,
Thank you so much for your great comments .... so glad you liked it!!!
TokenArt,
great colouring!!! .... In my opinion, the restoration is a bit 'too' soft/blurred ... and, unless you wanted it that way ... I think too many details have been lost ... TokenArt 12-17-2004, 04:35 AM well as I said I am VERY new to this..I normally do digital art..not editing pictures so..This is all very new to me...
TokenArt uturn 12-17-2004, 07:11 AM no worries... my attempt was blur extreme... :( practice makes perfect. it looks like each task can be done in 10 different ways, so it takes some time to perfect it... Flora 12-17-2004, 09:31 AM TokenArt, uturn,
.... if you are not put off by honest opinions, and are willing to learn/experiment with the 10 (or more  ) ways to do things ... you've surely found the right place!!!! TokenArt 12-17-2004, 09:37 AM well I am not put off..not at all that was why came here..to learn...
TokenArt TokenArt 12-17-2004, 09:48 AM well here is my retry at this photo...let me know if its better
TokenArt Flora 12-17-2004, 09:57 AM :bigthmb: ....
It has a beautiful 'dreamy' feeling and the details are there ....
Great!!! TokenArt 12-17-2004, 10:04 AM Well hope its better than my first attempt..and tried to keep the detail in this one

Probally overdid it, that seems to be my problem sometimes. Flora 12-18-2004, 03:16 AM Hi vinniesworld,
You managed to remove the 'texture' very well ... maybe a bit too soft ... but that's my taste...
maybe it's only my monitor, but there seems to be a cyan/greenish cast and some green spots on her face and in her hair... TokenArt 12-18-2004, 03:28 AM Using neat image and paint shop pro to get this one...
TokenArt uturn 12-18-2004, 11:27 PM First of all big thanx to Flora who took her time to prepare a tutorial for me.
Thanx to all for the suggestions. I actually used multiple techniques on this one. First I had it scanned at 800dpi but no filters (or my computer) wanted to work it. I scanned the photo at 400dpi and that made a difference. I started with FFT but still some of the pattern remained. I think this is still due to the resolution. Couple of leyers with Neat Image and Gausssian Blur and masked out the eyes.. some face details... This took me several tries and some rum with coke... It looks a bit over saturated, what do you think?
Now I'm gonna have to play around to resize it for 5x7 print out... ya.. gonna be long night... TokenArt 12-19-2004, 12:15 AM well using your new pic did a little more editing..see what you think?
TokenArt uturn 12-19-2004, 07:55 AM face is too pale for my taste but i see where you're going with this... i'll try something here.... :robot: I thought I'd take a crack at this. After using FFT, I ran Neat Image at moderately low settings and then faded back even more. The end result does have some sharpness to it but it also has a bit of texture in the background. Might be alright for a 5 X 7 but not sure I'd want to go any larger unless more time was spent blurring out the texture areas.
Cheers
Dave TokenArt 12-25-2004, 03:22 PM well here is my last attempt at this...tried to keep more of the detail this time...and all I used for this was neat image..went to advance and played with the settings
TokenArt swanseamale47 01-11-2005, 04:08 PM I had a go at your pic, I ran it through neat image then into PS for some cleaning and sharpening, and a tweek at the colours. Wayne |
