I was watching NFL football on Christmas day while the turkey cooked and noticed the neat way they show the graphic of how many yards the play was or something - I know so little about football :dizzy: :dizzy:

Anyway, what I'm talking about is the arrow graphic they show on the field with information on it.

Making the graphic is simple enough, but how do they get it BEHIND the players??

It would be easy to do with the blue/green screen effect, but I'm assuming that the players and the fans who paid to see the game live would object to a plain green field.

Any ideas how it's done??

I saw a documentary about how they do the digital 10-yard line, and the cameras have a builtin 3d grid of the field and know precisely where they're located and it draws the line based on a clear field. Anything obstructing is taken to be a player and allowed to overlap the line. I assume the effect you describe is handled similarly.
