| View Full Version : Creative Portraits: Bride with Flowers in her Hair DannyRaphael 01-02-2005, 07:08 PM The happy bride. Xaran 01-02-2005, 10:38 PM Xero Line Art, Painter IX and Helen Yancy Tutorials. Christine Axleuk 01-03-2005, 12:36 AM Xaran, Your impression is simply wonderful to look at. I have been trying to acheive a similiar look with limited success. You mention Helen Yancy tutorials, are these online based or are they the ones that Helen features on her DVD's ? Xaran 01-03-2005, 01:36 AM The DVD Tutorials - worth the money in my opinion. Christine jaykita 01-03-2005, 03:43 AM Very Nice, Christine. I did one layer of vp airbrush (lowered opacity), and one render-clouds layer, after retouching and manipulation of the image. Axleuk 01-03-2005, 03:55 AM Jaykita, i love your take on the bride, but if i may be so bold as to mention one detail that has caught my attention, the red blotch in the hair above the flower, i find this a slight distraction and think that perhaps the image would benefit if you erased it. Just a little observation. jaykita 01-03-2005, 04:28 AM Jaykita, i love your take on the bride, but if i may be so bold as to mention one detail that has caught my attention, the red blotch in the hair above the flower, i find this a slight distraction and think that perhaps the image would benefit if you erased it. Just a little observation. Hello Axleuk, if you look closer, you'll notice many such blotches, like the one on the ribbon to the right  But thats the style i normally go for. Perfectly imperfect, i'd like to think! However, i thank you for your advice, and decided to take it. Hence this next image. Axleuk 01-03-2005, 04:41 AM Hi Jaykita, in my humble opinion, the second image looks nicer and cleaner, even with the other blotches i think the balance is just right now. Your style is great, and the whole feel of the image is very warming, it was just that red blotch that kept catching my eye that i found slightly distracting. I would do a rendition myself, but the monitor i have here in work is aweful and i fear the image would look different to you guys ( and gals ) than it would to me. Axleuk 01-03-2005, 05:48 AM Ok, at the risk of embaressing myself with my monitor issues, i still went ahead and had a go at this image. This method involved duplicating the image several times, basic retouching skills, hue and saturation at each stage, running the impressionist plug-in a few times at varying levels, selective opacity erasing, and then merging layers together with the whitewashed frame. I wanted to acheive a dreamy serene effect, but i think i ran away a little too much ( never know when to stop ), still, was fun and learnt something new along the way. Janet Petty 01-03-2005, 06:05 AM Nice subject to work with. So far I'm liking the different versions. Jaykita, yours is great as always. You really have a talent for this arty stuff. Axle, yours is very nice too. Xaran, I'm glad you have so much to work with. It gives a whole new dimension to the game. Great job. Janet Axleuk 01-03-2005, 01:31 PM Well this is just some basic retouching work with some warming colour for added effect. DannyRaphael 01-03-2005, 01:41 PM Christine: That's a dynamite interpretation. The background and hair are especially effective. Where did Xero Line Art come into play? To add some detail? = = = = = = = = = Axle: Although kind of a dark mood, I thought your "Death of an Angel" was very artistic. = = = = = = = = = I'm not sure if I like this or not, but I'm tired of looking at it... There are too many layers to describe (I went on and on and on combining layers), but there are layers rendered by Photoshop's Dry Brush, Colored Pencil and Photocopy filters as well as one using the Virtual Painter Oil Painting plugin and Impressionist > Pencil Sketch > Detailed Mono style. ~Danny~ Janet Petty 01-03-2005, 02:05 PM Danny, you might not be sure if you like it but others do. I'm included in that number. I sort of want to describe it as paint by number with watercolors. Not bad work there. Janet Axleuk 01-03-2005, 02:59 PM Axle: Although kind of a dark mood, I thought your "Death of an Angel" was very artistic. Sorry Danny, after viewing it a few times, i decided to delete the post. I made the image very quickly and felt it was a bit too amaturish by even my own humble standards Xaran 01-03-2005, 09:17 PM Christine: That's a dynamite interpretation. The background and hair are especially effective. Where did Xero Line Art come into play? To add some detail? ~Danny~ Danny I used Xero Line Art in drawing mode with the top slider set all the way to the left to brighten the picture to start with. Christine Neve 01-03-2005, 11:50 PM Beautiful result Christine, extremely pleasant to view! Jaykita, this is ethereal, soft and fantasy-like. Wonderful result! Don't stop posting Axle, you're doing really well, welcome aboard. Great effort Danny as always and thanks for a lovely photo. I'm looking forward to working on this... Neve 01-04-2005, 01:48 AM I'm not too sure how this will look after being compressed? as it was enlarged and worked on entirely in Painter 8 (I'm still learning...). Used Acrylic throughout. Worked on a different layer each time I decreased the size of the brush. I love the Soft Clone feature which brings back details you want into your image. I'm a bit rough on the strokes (didn't follow the contours correctly) but I enjoyed the process. Axleuk 01-04-2005, 02:17 AM Hopefully i will be getting my new Wacom tablet today and am looking forward to using Painter, your picture looks great, i'm impressed by the appearance of real brush strokes, i can see myself having a lot of fun with this. Neve 01-04-2005, 03:54 AM I just got my Wacom last week and still fumbling. I've only done 3 projects in Painter so far and know I'm hooked already. Thanks for commenting Axle. DannyRaphael 01-04-2005, 08:19 AM I just got my Wacom last week and still fumbling. Keep on "fumbling," Neve... You're already on the right track. ~Danny~ Neve 01-04-2005, 04:22 PM I appreciate your encouragement...thank you. Axleuk 01-04-2005, 06:09 PM Painter XI: Like Neve, i have just received my Wacom recently, in fact i received it a few hours ago. I have never used a tablet before nor have I ever looked into Painter as an application to work with, but after viewing some of the work that has been posted using such a application, i had to try it for myself. You will have to excuse my lack of description as i only started to mess around with this image and did not pay attention too much to what i was actually doing, but if i recall i started out by going over the image in acrylic, very similiar to Neve's taking time to try and keep the some sort of physical resemblence. I varied the brush sizes to accomadate the different levels of detail i wanted to keep then saved and opened it again in Photoshop, applied a smidgeon of smartblur and smoothed out a few of what i can only call 'minor' distractions and finished it off with a canvas texture. I beleive the original has a much cleaner refined look than the compressed version, but alas here she is. Neve 01-04-2005, 11:34 PM Wonderful first effort Axle both with Painter and your Wacom....YEAH!!!!! Keep 'em coming whatever you do. Tell me, have you tried to use the eraser yet on your Wacom Pen....mines isn't working at all. ? I will have to investigate. Axleuk 01-05-2005, 03:56 AM Wonderful first effort Axle both with Painter and your Wacom....YEAH!!!!! Keep 'em coming whatever you do. Tell me, have you tried to use the eraser yet on your Wacom Pen....mines isn't working at all. ? I will have to investigate. Thanks Neve.....regarding the eraser, i seem to remember at one point it was working, but now it seems to select a colour, which leads me to believe that it is custom configurable. HAve you read this post yet Neve ? http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9482 i found it to be very useful at helping you navigate the interface. Xaran 01-05-2005, 10:42 AM There have been some fabulous renditions for this, can't wait to see what Axle and Neve will come up with once they get used to there Wacoms and Painter. Re: the eraser - when you turn the pen to the eraser it should automatically bring up the eraser brushes in painter. Christine Legacy~Art 01-05-2005, 02:23 PM Hello i am very new to this forum, and i cannot see how i can add a small photograph, i did my version to this beautiful bride, can someone please tell me do i just add a photo with the icon provided or do i need to reduce it in size before upload it? Legacy Legacy~Art 01-05-2005, 02:32 PM Please help... Ok i uploaded an attachment i also made it into a thumbnail i can upload the larger version if needed. Legacy :pleased: ( Thank you Danny for your help ) DannyRaphael 01-05-2005, 02:40 PM Please help... Ok i uploaded an attachment i also made it into a thumbnail i can upload the larger version if needed. Legacy :pleased: Welcome, Legacy: I admire your tenacity (in getting the pic uploaded) and from what I could see of it, your talent, too. If you're using Photoshop, you can size your images to ~ 8" x 10" at 72-80 ppi, then use File > Save for Web and adjust the quality setting to get the image < 100 KB. If you like click the Edit button for your post, the Manage Attachments button and delete the too-tiny-to-appreciate attachment and upload a larger one. In any event, I'm glad you found us and jumped right in with a creation. ~Danny~ Legacy~Art 01-05-2005, 02:55 PM Oh Danny thank you, i shall try that now. Legacy Neve 01-06-2005, 01:38 AM Well Done Legacy-art, nice result. She seems to have a sparkle about her. Axle - thanks for the useful link, I've earmarked it to check out in a week's time, I'm off again to babysit the grandkids for a while (school holidays here). There's a great deal to learn re Painter but I'm determined to stick with it as the results I've seen others achieve are simply outstanding and at times breath-taking. Christine - I hadn't even got around to checking out any erasers in Painter8 yet. They don't come up automatically, however, it is now working when I go select that category. Thank you. There's probably a configuration involved as Axle suggested and I'll check that later on also. I'm relieved I'm not the only one new to Painter   LOL Legacy~Art 01-14-2005, 11:54 AM I used his Impressionist Plugin... I have to tell you i have used this plugin on nearly every single picture on my computer... Legacy... Even doing "Dannys" Instructions on resizing i am still having trouble... DannyRaphael 01-14-2005, 12:34 PM I used his Impressionist Plugin... I have to tell you i have used this plugin on nearly every single picture on my computer... Legacy... Even doing "Dannys" Instructions on resizing i am still having trouble... This one sized OK. re: Impressionist plugin This is one of my all time favorites. FYI: Microsoft wrote Impressionist, not Trimoon. He uses it frequently on the wonderful artwork he creates. Legacy~Art 01-14-2005, 01:54 PM Well thank you Danny...Microsoft wow its the first thing i like about microsoft plugins...do we have anymore of these plugins? :rainbow: Harry ~ I sent you the psp scripts did you get them? Never got a reply? :dizzy: Its hardwork running after a 34yr old man you know, get me some water, get me some tissues, i need the bowl i feel sick...MEN! PamSav 11-18-2005, 05:42 PM I've been playing around with the free version of Deep Paint lately and though I'd use it on this old pic. Hope you like it ! Larger version here: Bride with Flowers in her Hair (http://www.pbase.com/pamsav/image/52437211/original) cazubi 11-18-2005, 07:36 PM Awsome, Pam. I used Studio Artist and Painter. This is a very nice photo and I will do something else with it again. Cathy :pleased: Steve Conway 11-19-2005, 07:33 AM Sometimes this 100k gets me, but managed to get this in by the skin of my Pentium. Steve raniday 11-19-2005, 11:13 AM Danny, thanks for a great photo to play with. All the paintings here are gorgeous! Here's my attempt, done in Painter using Captured Bristle, Just Add Water, and Cover Pencil. I kept messing with the canvas texture and never got it just like I wanted it, but life goes on :) cazubi 11-19-2005, 08:02 PM Catherine and Steve: Very beautiful. I used painter oils for my second try. Cathy :) Steve Conway 11-20-2005, 09:36 AM Thanks Cathy. Had to really reduce the original downoad size after the manip. So the quality was not as good as the original, but I got it to finally upload. Steve Catherine and Steve: Very beautiful. I used painter oils for my second try. Cathy :) Duv 11-20-2005, 02:35 PM Boy, the last half dozen entries have been really great!! I just tried some PopArTisT adjusted back, Twirl Motion Blur on background, a noise filter and then ran a pastels effect in Paint Shop Pro. Cheers Dave Chance_1 11-20-2005, 05:00 PM jaykita - love your watercolor softish effect, brilliantly done to get that very soft look axle - like your watercolored background version on the first version, and love your great looking background on the second version neve - love the impasto effect you got on the hair legacy - like your out of the frame effect pamsav - always liked your work, and you have plenty of them rainday - love your second version which has a great frame effect, and love your background, I need to learn to make such great backgrounds. Danny - thanks for the welcome and thank you for the great tutorials and stuff, and are you sure there is only one of you ? My modest version is done in Painter 9 with Acrylic with Captured Bristle variant and tried to add some paint and blend in lightly. Will be quite a while before I can match the great talent here. NancyJ 11-23-2005, 03:53 AM Server went down at work and this is the only site I can get to so I thought I'd have a play at this one while I wait. Nanls 11-27-2005, 07:22 PM hmmm, mine ended up in a new thread.. Don't know why it happened. Have been playing with smudge painting. Would like to know how to get the beautiful edge effects the atist get, like in Catherin's image. ~Nancy~ cazubi 11-27-2005, 08:17 PM Nancy, you can use plugins like Extensis Photoframe, or Auto FX Photo/Graphic edges. If you want to make your own you can make a layer mask and use some of the different natural media brushes to paint an edge around the image. When it looks the way that you want it you apply mask. You can have a paper layer under it so that it looks like it was painted on. You can then use the eraser with a low opacity to fade areas around edge. I am sure that there are many other ways to do it too. Cathy :wavey: Nanls 11-28-2005, 06:29 PM Nancy, you can use plugins like Extensis Photoframe, or Auto FX Photo/Graphic edges. I will try your suggetions... Thanks, Nancy raniday 11-29-2005, 07:28 AM Nan, you have Photographic Edges? I've wanted that for such a long time but just can't make myself turn loose of the money for it. How do you like it, and would you buy it again? Nanls 11-29-2005, 10:05 AM Hi Catherine, I have volume 4, and to tell you the truth there are only maybe 10 or so that I like enough to use.. There are three action sets for borders here: www.liknes.no/photoshop I haven't tried then, but they look nice in the representation. I have been playing with the history brush and some brushes and I like some of the results I am achiving, although I'll have to work at it a little more to get it down. Nancy cazubi 11-29-2005, 10:13 AM Catherine, I also have Photoframe and I really like the program. It is very easy to use because it is a PS plugin and 10,000 edges and frames are instantly available to you. I also have AutoFx Photographic Edges (I am addicted to plugins) and I don't like it as well. I'm lazy and don't like to mess around with edges that I have to make myself. Cathy  raniday 11-29-2005, 01:48 PM Thanks, Nancy & Cathy. I saved the sites to my favorites for the actions and PhotoFrame, and I'll go back and browse a little later. I love plugins and actions, too. The most recent filters I've bought lately are Organic Edges & Sketch Master. lkroll 12-12-2005, 09:19 PM GIMP's NL filter, Paint Engine, Impressionist, Cybia's Colourworks filter and some smudging (please don't ask what steps; I tend to go a little crazy and end up with something that I rarely can reproduce exactly; LOL). :) Neve 12-22-2005, 11:47 PM :wavey: Wishing all my RetouchPro friends a very merry Christmas and even better 2006! A special thank you to Danny for your unfailing support and encouragement :bigthmb: All the best wishes to you and your family this festive season. Another go at this lovely bride almost a year since my first attempt. May everyone enjoy this wonderful time of Christmas. ~Danny~ Peter S 12-21-2006, 05:39 PM A whole year since the last posting in this thread!!!!!
