Took this photo a few days ago.

I was trying to follow this tutorial.

but have ommitted one step (the watercolour stroke bg layer).

PAINTER
Open original image. Clone and minimize Clone.
Maximize Original image –Apply Woodcut 45/10/2/19/output black/
for this image. Save as Outline.BMP image and open in….

Photoshop and apply Cutout – I used 8/2/2 for this image. Save as Outline.bmp. Close.

PAINTER

Maximize Cloned Image.
Impressionist Filter/Paint:Free Daubs
Settings for this image: 25/97/76 (Image)
(you need Impressionist Plugin installed in Painter)

New Layer
Blenders/Just Add Water
Used this on jetty and figures.
Blenders/Soft Blend Stump 20 – ocean
I altered opacity and sizes as required.
Low opacity on light areas, higher opacity on darker areas
Layers/Drop all

Open Outline.bmp image in Painter.Ctrl+A to select all. Edit, copy.Mnimize then Maximize Original WC image Paste/Appears as new Layer over Canvas.

Layer Mode/Magic Combo/30% Duplicate this layer Mode/Luminosity 20%

With the layers above you need to experiment as every Image is different.

Once you have a satisfactory outline over your canvas, Merge top two layers only. The outline must remain On its own layer. On the outline layer:-

Reduce the opacity to suit.

Blenders/Soft Blend Stump 20
Blend all the outlines
Layer Blend Mode -/Gel/20% for this image or whatever suits.Layers/Drop all

You can further enhance image in Painter by Duplicating final image.Ctrl+A select all. Edit/Copy. Open original Painting and Edit/Paste (appears as a new layer) Mode – Multiply 100% (for this image)

He now has me hooked on painter ix not good as this is trial and i only have a pc mouse to use, so its frustrating...

But since i followed his tutorial on the little boy picture today, i am now hooked all my pictures are getting a hit on painter.

I think you should make Axleuk a moderator cos after such a short time that guy only had painter about a week and comes up with a tutorial that got me hooked and understanding it alittle more...That in itself needs a medal!

Ok i followed Axleuk tutorial on painter on this, and then i took it to photoshop did the hue thing to it and then added the texture.

I found it interesting that in the section where he describes the software he uses he went out of the way to point he didn't use Photoshop. In this WC tutorial he described using Photoshop's Cutout filter to soften the BW sketch rendered by Painter. Hmmm... closet Photoshop guy, I guess. :)

Line drawing:
Photoshop users can get a similar line drawing effect by applying:
* Stylize > Find Edges
* Image > Adjustments > Levels (to get rid of some of the noise)
* Artistic > Cutout -or- Stylize > Diffuse > Anisotropic to soften the edges

-or-
* Blur > Smart Blur > Edges only
* Image > Invert (to get black lines on white)
* Artistic > Cutout -or- Stylize > Diffuse > Anisotropic to soften the edges

Background arty effect:
Regarding the effects rendered by the no longer available "Microsoft PhotoDraw II", this program had a "built-in" version of the Impressionist plugin. Aren't we lucky to have it as a standalone plugin? :)

Here's my effort for this one. I used the same technique as I did for the Down by the Jetty thread here (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/showthread.php?p=79751#post79751), just altering some of the values and layer opacities.

Thank you Neve...its all thanks to Axeluk i opened the painter program and it scared me...lol and then i did the tutorial of his and with a mouse its hard to do, dont have the sensitive pressure but it was fun to do.

Awww thank you Pam i have also answered your email...To him its easy, and he only had the wacom for like 2 weeks, after 2 weeks and produces a tutorial like that he should have commission from wacom lol!

Legacy, very well done. Was this with the WetOils10 cloner? If so, it turned into a nice watercolor with the Hue/Sat & texture. I can't wait to see how good your work will turn out with a tablet. It makes a LOT of difference.

Pam, looks like you've got the Impressionist bug and doing well with it. Keep 'em coming.

Here's my 1st successful try at a "real" watercolor: I started in Elements2 by cropping the image and enlarging what was left. Then I applied a masked layer with NeatImage to clean up the JPG artifacts here & there. The rest was done in Painter8 with various brushes from the DigitalWaterColor category. (Mostly FinerMop, PointedSimpleWater, FineTipWater, a bit of NewSimpleDiffuser, and a pinch of Salt - try it - a very cool effect.) I played around with the Diffusion & WetFringe settings with good results. Most of this was cloned, of course, but I did do a bit of hand painting to get the water to look more like water / less like sky, and to add a hint of detail to the children's faces. Here I overdid the boy's eye a bit, but the girl turned out great IMO. Finshed by adding texture in Painter. This was a great learning experience and very fun to do.

Mark - I have got both the Impressionist and the Painter bugs!! I'm like a kid in a sweet shop, I don't know which one to play with next :D :grin: :D

I really like how yours turned out. I'll have to play with the brushes you mentioned. I've been sticking to the wet oil cloner so far.

Hmmm...do I get a new dryer for the one that died today, or a wacom tablet? Very tough decision...but I think my husband will overrule me here.

This one is just the usual stuff I do. Nothing fancy.

My 2nd image was done with image-calculations on duplicate with green channel, and a bit of jugglery after that.

Mark - yes it was the wet oils10 cloner, i am going to get a tablet this week if it kills me finding one!

Ahutton - how pretty love this colors! (pcworld i see as a tablet and mouse and pen for £19.99 if i could get my hands on a copy of painter i be going to get that one lol)

Buzz about 50, VP watercolor, everything set to Subtle, VP Oil, set on Subtle for everything but material-Normal. Nothing unique. I use VP a lot, but if you use it on a layer, most of the results will increase or decrease the size of the image, and screw up you finished image if you go higher than Subtle. Thanks for the kind comments.
