Both of you are on the right track when you think children; but the names you supplied are incorrect. Try again please. His influence still exists today!!!

Walt Disney?

Janet Petty
03-22-2005, 04:34 PM
Right on Mary Lynn. Your turn.

MaryLynn
03-22-2005, 08:58 PM
Good clues, Janet. It could have been a couple of other people too.

Here's the next one. Swedish born female

Gary Richardson
03-23-2005, 12:56 AM
Ann Margret.

MaryLynn
03-23-2005, 08:27 AM
You got it, Gary. Your turn.

Gary Richardson
03-23-2005, 09:47 AM
Lucky first guess.

OK, this one is a comedy actor.

CJ Swartz
03-23-2005, 04:26 PM
Ray Romano?
(although you probably don't really know him on "your side of the pond")

Gary Richardson
03-23-2005, 04:41 PM
No, it's not Ray (you're right, I've never heard of him). This guy's from this side of the pond. Hope he's known in the US.

Janet Petty
03-23-2005, 08:42 PM
Hugh Grant?

Gary Richardson
03-24-2005, 01:50 AM
No sorry. He's more often seen as part of a duo.

MaryLynn
03-25-2005, 09:44 AM
This has taken some real thought. Is it John Cleese?

Gary Richardson
03-25-2005, 11:26 AM
No, not John. This guy spends a lot of time at the drones.

CJ Swartz
03-25-2005, 12:27 PM
No, not John. This guy spends a lot of time at the drones.

Okay, now I'm going to have to look up "the drones" on Google -- IF I can figure out your clue, then maybe it will give me a hint to the identity of the pixel guy.  Gary, you know how to "keep the mystery alive"!

hmmm, which "drones"?

The Drones -- punk rock group,

"Many of the young heroes of the books are members of the Drones Club, situated in the heart of London. It is an establishment where time is passed drinking, betting and telling exaggerated, unlikely stories. Hard up Drones are continually trying all sorts of cunning plans to diddle money out of wealthier club members." -- Drone Club of Belgium re: author P.G. Wodehouse

Bagpipes -- The drones are a straight tube, made in two parts, and a single reed.

Gary Richardson
03-25-2005, 05:45 PM
Think PG. His servant can also help you search the web.

MaryLynn
03-25-2005, 06:39 PM
Hugh Laurie?

Gary Richardson
03-26-2005, 01:48 AM
Hugh Laurie it is.

I loved his portrayal of Bertie Wooster, and his once comedy duo partner Stephen Fry (IMO) played the definitive Jeeves.

Your turn Mary.

MaryLynn
03-26-2005, 09:07 AM
Jeeves gets the credit for finding the answer to your riddles. I had never heard of Hugh Laurie although now that I've seen his bio, I have seen him before. I'll have to look for "Jeeves and Wooster".

Here's an international female.

MaryLynn

Gary Richardson
03-26-2005, 09:26 AM
Kylie Minogue ?

MaryLynn
03-26-2005, 09:32 AM
No, sorry, not Kylie.

Gary Richardson
03-26-2005, 09:42 AM
Did'nt really think it would be, just a shot in the dark. The highlit area to the left makes recognising the face shape difficult, so guess I'm going to have to wait for a few clues on this one.

MaryLynn
03-26-2005, 10:43 AM
Leading men from Spencer Tracy and Gary Cooper to Rex Harrison and Albert Finney. Noted for her wholesome beauty.

Janet Petty
03-26-2005, 11:32 AM
Janet Leigh?

MaryLynn
03-26-2005, 12:04 PM
No, not Janet Leigh

CJ Swartz
03-26-2005, 12:11 PM
My guess would be Audrey Hepburn, since I know she co-starred with all of them except Spencer Tracy (can't remember a film with them together - but I'd love to see one).

I was going to add that I'd never heard of Gary's pixeler, Hugh Laurie, because I haven't, but when I saw his photo, I realized that I've been watching him on TV for the last month as the surly doctor in "House". :aghast:

MaryLynn
03-26-2005, 12:58 PM
Sorry, earlier (and later) than Audrey. You might say she traveled the world.

I agree, CJ, I didn't recognize Hugh Laurie by name either.

Gary Richardson
03-26-2005, 05:15 PM
CJ, The "House" clue would have been my next, as I've just been reading in my satellite TV mag that it has been shown recently in the states. Unfortunately Mary Lynn got him before I had chance. I thought Hugh might be a bit unknown stateside.

CJ Swartz
03-26-2005, 08:12 PM
MaryLynn, I've got it this time! It must be Ingrid! Ingrid Bergman starred with Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, Rex Harrison, AND Albert Finney.

Gary, not only did I not know the name of the actor in "House", I didn't know he was English. But, from what I've looked up on the internet, I wasn't the only one who didn't recognise him as English, since one of the show's producers thought he was American. "Laurie, who has received early critical praise for House, is self-deprecating about his skilled American accent, attributing it to 'a misspent youth (watching) too much TV and too many movies'." :aghast:

MaryLynn
03-26-2005, 08:33 PM
You got it CJ. It is Ingrid Bergman. She starred with all those men as well as many others. She was in Casablanca, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, Bells of St. Marys, For Whom the Bell Tolls and Murder on the Orient Express to name a few of her movies.

Your turn!

CJ Swartz
03-26-2005, 10:19 PM
This pixeler is a screen legend.

Gary Richardson
03-27-2005, 01:53 AM
Betty Davies.

CJ Swartz
03-27-2005, 03:09 AM
Betty Davies.

No, this lady was not born in the USA. They both tried out for the same part at least once, and she and Bette both were Oscar winners.

Gary Richardson
03-27-2005, 07:45 AM
Vivean Leigh? Thought it might be Joan Crawford since her and Bette were always competing for roles, but of course she's a Texan.

CJ Swartz
03-27-2005, 09:20 AM
Vivean Leigh?

Correct for 1 million .... uh, er, RetouchPro points!

It is the beautiful Vivien Leigh, winner of TWO Oscars for Best Actress.

Your turn, Gary!

Gary Richardson
03-27-2005, 09:40 AM
This one's a sportsman.

MaryLynn
03-27-2005, 09:20 PM
Ichiro Suzuki?

Gary Richardson
03-28-2005, 01:19 AM
Think west coast. But according to reports better known outside of the States.

MaryLynn
03-28-2005, 07:03 PM
Ichiro playing for the Seattle Mariners is about as west coast (US) as you can get. If your subject is a baseball player, I can't think of another west coast team with blue hats.

But, that's assuming we are talking baseball. Since that is probably not a good assumption to make, I'll just have to wait for more clues. Right now David Beckham is the only international player I think of.

Gary Richardson
03-29-2005, 01:08 AM
Right Continent, wrong State, wrong sport. This guy has been a world champion, but he's not too hot.

Janet Petty
03-29-2005, 07:20 PM
Pele the soccer wizard? (At least I think that is his name)

MaryLynn
03-29-2005, 08:36 PM
Is this person a cyclist and is he currently living outside the US?

Gary Richardson
03-30-2005, 12:29 AM
Not Pele, not a cyclist. His career is on a slippery slope, and rapidly going downhill.

MaryLynn
03-30-2005, 10:21 AM
So this would be a skier! I have to reject Bode Miller because he lives in New Hampshire. Back to exploring the internet!

Gary Richardson
03-30-2005, 12:12 PM
Yes, you're right, its not Bode, but he only lives in New Hampshire outside the skiing season. During the season he lives in a camper van, unlike many of the European skiers who live it up in hotels.

Poor British skiers can neither afford hotels nor a camper van, and have been known to take up residence in hotel cellars.

Martin Bell made more money in one season of the Seniors series in the States, than he made in all his career at the sharp end in the World Cup series.

Back to the clues. This one should give you him for sure. As well as being a world ski champ, he's also been world jet ski champion.

CJ Swartz
03-30-2005, 01:35 PM
.... His career is on a slippery slope, and rapidly going downhill.

...and I WAS thinking it would turn out to be Tiger Woods, till you said it really was a skier....

Gary Richardson
03-30-2005, 04:31 PM
Skiing's a bit of a passion with me, its the only sport I'm really interested in. Who's Tiger Woods, and is he having a bad time at the moment?

CJ Swartz
03-30-2005, 07:24 PM
Since I don't know the answer to the pixel game, I'll answer another question. ;)

Skiing's a bit of a passion with me, its the only sport I'm really interested in. Who's Tiger Woods, and is he having a bad time at the moment?

Brief bio of Tiger Woods
Was making golf shots by age 2.
Becomes the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur Champion in golf history.

Age 20 -- Ties the British Open record for an amateur with a 75-66-70-70-281. Turns pro in August and immediately signs endorsement deals worth $40 million from Nike and $20 million from Titleist. Wins the Las Vegas International and the Disney/Oldsmobile Classic—earning close to $800,000 in just eight events. Voted Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.

Age 21 -- Leading money winner on the PGA Tour with a record $2,066,833 in earnings. Wins first major championship, The Masters, by an amazing 12 strokes, the widest margin of victory the tournament has ever seen. Becomes youngest Masters winner ever.

BUT....
In January 2005, Tiger wins the Buick Invitational, ending a slump that started in 2003. The last full-field PGA tournament he won was the Western Open in July 2003.

I liked skiing the only time I went many years ago in Utah -- I couldn't negotiate my snowplow turns even, and fell or sat down a lot rather than hit a tree -- but it was still loads of fun.

I love watching a good skier schuss down a slope, but guess I'll never learn. Are you able to ski often, or just able to watch on TV? Where do you go to ski? Arizona, even though we have a lot of desert, also has snowy mountain slopes that offer skiing for those who can't make it to Colorado, Utah, or the northeast.

MaryLynn
03-31-2005, 12:00 AM
Is it Daron Rahlves? If so, I owe it all to Google.

Gary, if you were here, you would be happy to know that the western Washington ski areas have received enough snow in the past week to re-open. They have been closed since January because we have not had our normal winter moisture. We were beginning to worry about having enough snowpack in the mountains to get us through the summer.

Gary Richardson
03-31-2005, 01:06 AM
Hi Mary,

Yes, it's Daron Rahlves, who has won more Downhill and Super G races than any other American skier in history.

Wish I could come and ski in Washington at the moment. Unfortunately I've had my annual 2 weeks fix this year. Had a great 2 weeks in Meribel in France. It had snowed 4 days non-stop before we got there, and we had 2 weeks of daytime sunshine and nightime snow showers, so had a great time.

CJ. As you can see, I'm a partaker, but enjoy watching on the TV also. I've been skiing now for about 20 years, every year religiously. I'm in mourning at the moment, because for me this season is over.

I've never skied in Arizona. I ski mostly in France, but have skied in Canada in Whistler and Mont Tremblant, and in the States in Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Keystone (all in Colorado), Park City, Deer Valley, Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude (all in Utah), and Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, North Star, Homewood, Heavenly (California/Nevada).

Well, I could bore for England on the joys of skiing, so I'll shut up now before you fall asleep.

Thanks for the bio on Tiger, I was of course joking when I said I did'nt know who he is, but I did'nt know any of the things you've told me, so I've learnt from my glib comment.

Over to you Mary.

MaryLynn
03-31-2005, 10:29 AM
That was a very good test of detective work and use of internet searching. Thanks, Gary.

This one will also take some detective work. Male American, more celebrated than celebrity.

BTW, it's MaryLynn (all one word), thanks.

Janet Petty
03-31-2005, 12:44 PM
Well it probably isn't Santa Claus. :lmao:

Gary Richardson
03-31-2005, 04:14 PM
Sorry for the mis-name MaryLynn. Looks a bit like Karl Marx, but you said American, so Teddy Roosevelt.

MaryLynn
03-31-2005, 05:21 PM
No, not Santa Claus or Teddy Roosevelt. Had some of Teddy's interests, but lived in the 20th century.

MaryLynn
04-02-2005, 12:57 PM
Perhaps you need more hints.

He worked on a grand scale.

We can only wonder what he might have done with modern technology.

Gary Richardson
04-02-2005, 04:09 PM
Sorry MaryLynn, got side tracked with the April competition and forgot all about this thread. No idea at present who your picture is, though I can see him well, great beard. I'm going to have to do some research on this one.

Gary Richardson
04-03-2005, 01:42 AM
Need a few more clues on this one.

Had a stab in the dark and looked up Grand Coulee Dam, the designer and chief engineer was Frank A Banks, but could'nt find any pictures of him.

Thought it might be Cornelius Vanderbilt, constructor of Grand Central Station, but his photo is nothing like the one you posted.

Had a look at ex-presidents, and he looks quite like James A. Garfield.

MaryLynn
04-03-2005, 11:24 AM
In the grand scheme of things you are on the right track. He, however, got off the beaten path, taking more than just a stroll in the park.

Gary Richardson
04-03-2005, 12:10 PM
Frederick Olmstead,co-creator of Central Park?

MaryLynn
04-03-2005, 01:01 PM
He worked closer to CJ's back yard, (and my back yard as well).

Danny and TPaul are good disciples.

"It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment." A quote

Janet Petty
04-03-2005, 02:34 PM
Ansel Adams?

MaryLynn
04-03-2005, 03:44 PM
Yes, Janet, it is Ansel Adams. And Gary was working so hard on this one!

"Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships!"

"Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter." -Ansel Adams

I'd like to think that Ansel Adams would have been a frequent contributor to RetouchPro!

Janet Petty
04-03-2005, 05:10 PM
Sorry Gary. I know you were working very hard on this one. The answer came almost as a flash of light when MaryLynn said that Danny and CJ were good disciples.

I admit to cheating a bit on this one. However, if I give a hint right now, it won't last past the first guess.

Janet

Gary Richardson
04-04-2005, 01:22 AM
Well done Janet, not too sure if I'd of got Ansel Adams. Now, about yours. Is it Marilyn Monroe.

Janet Petty
04-04-2005, 07:17 AM
Not Marilyn Monroe. Subject is male. Have another go please.

Gary Richardson
04-04-2005, 08:13 AM
Marlon Brando.

MaryLynn
04-04-2005, 08:58 AM
Tony Bennett?

TylerRB
04-04-2005, 04:03 PM
Possibly stretching a bit......but, I see Boba Fett!

Janet Petty
04-04-2005, 05:12 PM
Sorry folks, but none of the above.

The only hint I'm willing to give at this point is that I took the original portrait and reduced it to threshold; so it is completely black and white.

If you squint, the profile is really pretty sharp. The figure is VERY well known throughout the whole world.

Janet

Janet Petty
04-05-2005, 06:33 PM
Still no guesses...hmmmm, looks like I need to boost it up a notch.

This person is recently deceased.

Gary Richardson
04-06-2005, 02:13 AM
Bob Hope ? (He's about the only one I can think of who's died recently.)

Janet, the profile very probably is clear to you, you know who it is.

Janet Petty
04-06-2005, 06:41 AM
New Picture

Gary Richardson
04-06-2005, 10:29 AM
The Pope ? Well I really did'nt get that one, so I think you should post another.

Janet Petty
04-06-2005, 01:14 PM
Guess I didn't "pixelate" it enough. hahahaha. Right on Gary, your turn.

Janet

Gary Richardson
04-06-2005, 05:12 PM
OK, this guy's a well known TV personality. May not be too well known Stateside.

MaryLynn
04-12-2005, 12:12 AM
Sorry, Gary. I haven't a clue and I don't get BBC (not on my basic cable plan) so I can't even make a guess.

Gary Richardson
04-12-2005, 01:06 AM
In that case I'll give you a big clue. His Brother once made Indians sit down in protest.

Janet Petty
04-12-2005, 07:14 AM
Even with that clue, I'm still clueless. Sorry about the brain freeze. I must get more sleep. :dizzy:

Janet

Gary Richardson
04-12-2005, 08:38 AM
This guy's at the top of his field. You're as likely to know his voice as his face.
He can be a real animal at times.

His brother once made Brighton rock.

Gary Richardson
04-14-2005, 02:23 AM
Seems no takers on this one, so I'll tell you its David Attenborough, a presenter and commentator for countless natural history programmes. He was also head of Natural History unit for the BBC for years.

His brother is Richard Attenborough, an actor who made many films over his long career, including Brighton Rock in which he played a psychologically scarred young hoodlum, and who in later years directed the film Gandhi.

Gary Richardson
04-14-2005, 02:26 AM
OK, should get a few more takers on this one. Actor, American.

Janet Petty
04-14-2005, 08:16 AM
I never would have guessed Richard Attenborough in a million years; but then placing names with faces is a weakness of mine that is getting worse with age. Now give me a voice...................

Janet

Doug Nelson
05-16-2005, 05:33 PM
Harpo Marx?

Gary Richardson
05-16-2005, 05:49 PM
Hi Doug, almost forgot I'd posted this one. No not Harpo, but like him, has family in the same trade.

Kraellin
05-17-2005, 12:52 AM
did he have a partner he called 'ollie'?

K.

Gary Richardson

No, sorry its not Stan Laurel. His son might give you a good kicking if you're not careful.

Doug Nelson
05-17-2005, 01:43 AM
Pinky Lee?

MaryLynn
05-17-2005, 10:04 AM
Sorry I haven't been on this thread, Gary. I've been watching the heron chicks running laps around the nest.

Is it John Carradine, father of David Carradine?

Gary Richardson
05-17-2005, 10:11 AM
Sorry Doug, not Pinky.

MaryLynn, it most certainly is John Carradine, father of David, Keith, Robert and Bruce. Congratulations.

Did you have fun with the Heron chicks? I've been watching a pair of Red Kites, which were released near me on a captive breeding programme. They were released 2 years ago, and nested for the first time last year. No chicks then, but this year they have 2 chicks.

MaryLynn
05-17-2005, 11:17 AM
Yes, Gary, I've had a lot of fun with the heron chicks. It is hard to believe they only began hatching on 19 April when you look at them now. They are stretching their legs and flexing their wings, so much bigger than the balls of fluff with beaks of a few weeks ago.

This is the first year that I have looked at the wildlife cams and really appreciate being able to get such a close, non-intrusive view.

Your clue about the son with a kick was very helpful in solving your puzzle. Now I'll have to think of a good one to post later today.

Gary Richardson
05-20-2005, 03:08 AM
Oops, sorry, forgot to post the unpixellated picture of John, here it is.

MaryLynn
05-20-2005, 09:39 AM
Thanks for the unpixelated shot of John. I still would have needed your clues to figure him out.

Here is one of an actress whose work I admire.

Gary Richardson
05-20-2005, 12:47 PM
Bette Davis ?

MaryLynn
05-20-2005, 07:47 PM
No, sorry, not Bette Davis. Still working and winning awards.

Janet Petty
05-21-2005, 06:48 AM
Julie Andrews?

MaryLynn
05-21-2005, 07:04 AM
Sorry, folks, not Jane, Kathryn, Cate or Julie.

Doug's on the right track, however. She is in character.

Gary Richardson
05-21-2005, 09:05 AM
Deborah Kerr ?

MaryLynn
05-21-2005, 09:14 AM
Sorry, not Deborah either.

There is nothing like a Dame.

Doug Nelson
05-21-2005, 11:28 AM
Dame Judi?

Gary Richardson
05-21-2005, 11:42 AM
Glenda Jackson (not sure if she's a Dame or not) ?

MaryLynn
05-21-2005, 04:14 PM
Yes, Doug, it is Dame Judi Dench in her role as Queen Eliz I in "Shakespeare in Love". I threw in the grayscale to add to the puzzle.

Doug Nelson
05-21-2005, 11:00 PM
I'm glad it was her, I thought it was Miranda Richardson but couldn't remember her name.

Thread getting a bit long for the db, I've started a new one here (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/salon/16672-pixelated-celebrities-game-part-2-a.html).
