View Full Version : Pixelated Celebrities Game Doug Nelson 01-29-2005, 05:32 PM Ok, I stole this idea from here (http://j-walkblog.com/blog/), but that's ok because he stole if from another site :)
Here's the idea:
Look at the heavily pixelated image, guess who it is. You don't have to post an image, just a guess. Winner gets to post the next image for everyone else to guess, then the next winner posts a pixelated image, etc.
It's a famous person, in a relatively-famous image.
(in case future winners can't figure out how to pixelate, it's Filter>Pixelate>Mosaic. And don't forget to rename your file so the filename doesn't give it away)
This one isn't all that pixelated, if it gets guessed too quickly the next one can be a bit more pixelated. Hephaestos 01-29-2005, 09:57 PM Humphrey Bogart? Janet Petty 01-29-2005, 09:57 PM Humphrey Bogart??? Doug Nelson 01-29-2005, 10:32 PM Looks like you two were typing at the same moment, but Hephaestos hit "Submit Reply" first :)
I made this far too easy. It's your turn, Hephaestos. Hephaestos 01-29-2005, 11:00 PM I think it was plenty pixelated enough, just a pretty famous portrait as you said.
So I'll give this a shot. Doug Nelson 01-31-2005, 03:09 AM I don't know about everyone else, but I could use a hint :) Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 11:29 AM Kind of hard to gauge how tough to make these. :)
Here's a copy with a bit more definition. Doug Nelson 01-31-2005, 01:51 PM Candice Bergin? Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 02:01 PM Nope. :classic: Good try though I think.
When I showed it to my SO she guessed Princess Di, which while also incorrect I thought was pretty close considering.
The first one had ten-pixel pixels and the new one six, because I thought five looked like a dead giveaway but maybe not. I'd never seen this picture of the subject before I hunted it up the other day for the contest. CJ Swartz 01-31-2005, 04:04 PM Boy George? Janet Petty 01-31-2005, 04:04 PM Putting my foot in my mouth here and guessing (with your clue) Sarah Ferguson maybe? JustChecking 01-31-2005, 04:18 PM Scarlett Johansson? Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 04:25 PM Nope on all three counts. :D
Moving it down to four pixels... Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 04:31 PM (Which, unfortunately, looks even more like Scarlett Johansson, good guess.) Doug Nelson 01-31-2005, 05:13 PM Brooke Shields? (I'm starting to worry I won't know who it is even after it's been correctly guessed) Doug Nelson 01-31-2005, 06:00 PM Catherine Deneuve? CJ Swartz 01-31-2005, 06:54 PM Madonna???
(the software requires a minimum of 10 characters in each post, so I had to add ?'s) ;) Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 07:13 PM Not Shields, not Deneuve, not Madonna. (Didn't know that about 10 characters, I'll have to keep that in mind. :classic:)
I'm wondering the same thing Doug, she's not commonly seen in profile, so the shot I picked might be too tough.
She's actually earlier than any of the guesses so far. I'd give more hints but I don't know what'd help without giving it completely away. Let me know if you want me to upload something that's only 2-3 pixels of distortion. JustChecking 01-31-2005, 07:17 PM really just a shot in the dark - meryl streep? Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 07:28 PM Nope, even earlier than that. JustChecking 01-31-2005, 07:37 PM not commonly seen in profile and earlier than meryl? ... only one who comes to my mind is marilyn
should i kick myself or will someone do it for me? :lmao: ;) Doug Nelson 01-31-2005, 07:39 PM We had Bogey, so maybe Lauren Bacall? Hephaestos 01-31-2005, 07:44 PM And just in time too, I need to get back to lurking.
JustChecking's turn. JustChecking 01-31-2005, 07:55 PM how could i hit something when i'm shooting blanks? :scared: :ditsy:
well, i guess this will be a quickie... Janet Petty 01-31-2005, 09:02 PM Wynona Ryder JustChecking 02-01-2005, 04:59 AM yes, exacto, winona ryder
btw, Hephaestos, can you post bigger version of that marilyn pic?
anyways, Janet's turn :D Janet Petty 02-01-2005, 06:53 AM I think this will be fast as well. glikster 02-01-2005, 06:54 AM Robert Redford? Hephaestos 02-01-2005, 07:00 AM btw, Hephaestos, can you post bigger version of that marilyn pic?
Unfortunately no, I found it completely at random and that's the biggest version on the site I was on. (Forgot the site. That's about the only thing I miss about IE is that it would put the site in the comments for me.) Janet Petty 02-01-2005, 07:36 AM Somehow I knew that would be very easy. His is such a familiar and distinctive face. The challenge is up to you now Glikster.
Janet...passing the baton glikster 02-01-2005, 07:57 AM I think this is too easy.... Doug Nelson 02-01-2005, 08:11 AM John Cleese? glikster 02-01-2005, 08:13 AM it was far too easy. and I set that sucker up to 12.
Your turn! Doug Nelson 02-01-2005, 08:26 AM If you think it might be too easy, it probably is. Try squinting and zooming it down to thumbnail size first. A game that's a little too hard is much more fun than one that's way too easy.
Here's my next one: glikster 02-01-2005, 08:29 AM well, this may seem strange but I'm torn between Mr. Rogers and Cary Grant. Doug Nelson 02-01-2005, 08:34 AM Not strange at all, I'm the one that pixelated it and it looks like Cary Grant to me. But no, not either of those. Gary Richardson 02-01-2005, 08:59 AM Clark Gable. Axleuk 02-01-2005, 09:34 AM Sean Connery Doug Nelson 02-01-2005, 09:46 AM See what I mean? Too easy.
It's Mr. Gable's birthday today.
You're up, Gary. Gary Richardson 02-02-2005, 02:12 AM Have'nt got an Image to post just at the moment, will post one ASAP. Did'nt expect to get it first shot. Gary Richardson 02-02-2005, 02:21 AM OK, found one, this one is for members this side of the pond. Although it does have US connections. Janet Petty 02-02-2005, 06:33 AM Winston Churchill Gary Richardson 02-02-2005, 07:50 AM Yep! Got it first go. I think the Thumbnail was easier than the image looking at it now. Must pick someone more obscure if I ever get another go. Your turn now Janet. glikster 02-02-2005, 07:52 AM the thumbnail is always MUCH much clearer than the actual image.
I guess that we ought to know that it would do that considering how a mosaic works.
Oh well, it's a game, why would I think hard about a game? Janet Petty 02-02-2005, 09:07 AM It wasn't the pixelated. It was the pose. That particular picture of Winston Churchill is very well known.
This one should be harder. Hints are available.
First hint...Male JustChecking 02-02-2005, 09:14 AM First hint...Male
well, i don't know that many female celebs w/ moustache
at first i thought pierce brosnan, but ... cary elwes? Janet Petty 02-02-2005, 10:07 AM I guess it wasn't hard enough. Pierce Brosnan it is. What a HUNK!!! Your turn JC. JustChecking 02-02-2005, 10:32 AM the thumbnail is always MUCH much clearer than the actual image.
you're right (though in the case of churchill it was really the posture that was hyper-hint :D )
i suggest we use from now only pic at most 100 in height or width, that way the thumb won't be of any help... edit: it turns out that the system is smart enough, and doesn't even generate the thumbnail...
i'm afraid this one will be again a quickie  Doug Nelson 02-02-2005, 10:57 AM Good suggestion. Janet Petty 02-02-2005, 03:12 PM I still want to say Andee McDowell but I'm only 50/50 on that answer.
Janet JustChecking 02-02-2005, 03:54 PM nope, but you're on a good way, Janet... it's a female celeb  ;) [justTeasing]
all right, one pixel less... a bit too obvious by now, i guess: Janet Petty 02-02-2005, 07:48 PM Shot in the dark...Michelle Pheiffer? Doug Nelson 02-02-2005, 08:40 PM Madonna? (it has to be her one of these rounds) Hephaestos 02-02-2005, 08:58 PM I dunno why I think it looks like Sarah Michelle Gellar, but I think it does. JustChecking 02-03-2005, 06:20 AM and our lovely shooter in the dark Janet is da winner, it's really Michelle Pfeiffer
intentionally chose not-that-typical photo of her... well, that's the point of the game, ain't it?
your turn, Janet :) Janet Petty 02-03-2005, 06:34 AM Janet ( I can't believe I did this again) T Paul 02-03-2005, 07:49 AM Goldie Hawn? Janet Petty 02-03-2005, 09:16 AM This is way too easy. Right on T. How did you guess so fast. I not only pixelated it, but gave it an extra dose with another filter?
Have fun.
Janet Doug Nelson 02-03-2005, 09:30 AM I suspect people are afraid of making it too difficult. Check here (http://j-walkblog.com/blog/index/C0_29_1/) for some amazing examples of how little data is actually needed for this game. T Paul 02-03-2005, 09:34 AM Guess who... Gary Richardson 02-03-2005, 09:41 AM Vivean Leigh. T Paul 02-03-2005, 09:52 AM Nope, but a good guess. This actress is a bit more current. MBChamberlain 02-03-2005, 11:54 AM Emmy Rossum? T Paul 02-03-2005, 12:23 PM You are correct the image was of Emmy Rossum.
I just saw the movie Phantom of the Opera where she played Christine. It was fantastic! I highly recommend it. CJ Swartz 02-03-2005, 10:57 PM I was still wondering "Guess Who?" even after you told us the answer -- thanks for explaining who she is -- I guess I even saw her at the Golden Globes, but the name didn't stay with me -- Vivien Leigh will always be "current" with me. :) Gary Richardson 02-04-2005, 01:11 AM Never heard of her. MBChamberlain 02-04-2005, 08:24 AM Sorry it took me so long to post this: (Is my face red?) Doug Nelson 02-04-2005, 08:35 AM Emo Philips? Tom Baker? Helen Reddy? Leo Sayer? T Paul 02-04-2005, 08:51 AM I will admit I had never heard of her until I went and saw the movie. She started out as an opera singer at the age of seven! From there it was television, the theater and finally movies. Some of the movies she has been in are:
- The Phantom of the Opera (2004) .... Christine
- The Day After Tomorrow (2004) .... Laura Chapman
highly intelligent heroine
- Mystic River (2003) .... Katie Markum
Cast as the ill-fated daughter of a small-business owner
Biography (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002536/bio) Gary Richardson 02-04-2005, 09:12 AM Not the sort of films I watch, so it's not surprising I'd not heard of her I suppose.
Thanks for the biography link, I'm a bit more clued up now. Still don't think she's
someone who's film output I'm going to be waiting for with baited breath, but at least I'll recognise the name in future. MBChamberlain 02-04-2005, 09:17 AM Doug, first try... Emo Phillips it is. Doug Nelson 02-04-2005, 09:29 AM Woo hoo! I knew staying awake during the 80s would pay off some day! :)
Here's the next one: Gary Richardson 02-04-2005, 09:35 AM Is it Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? MBChamberlain 02-04-2005, 10:00 AM Michelle Pfeiffer? JustChecking 02-04-2005, 10:09 AM Woo hoo! I knew staying awake during the 80s would pay off some day! :)

I'm with Gary -- could be animal, vegetable OR mineral.... now I have to go look up Emo Phillips to add to my list of celebrities that I've never heard of...
Okay, I looked him up --
Interviewer:
"Or actually let me rephrase that, why is the comedy in America not as hip as in almost all other civilized countries?"
Emo Phillips:
"Because we allow handguns. when you know someone in the crowd might be packing a rod, it can't help but rush your timing." Doug Nelson 02-04-2005, 10:19 AM hint: male :) CJ Swartz 02-04-2005, 10:23 AM I'm squinting (that's a hint from that website you were showing us), and I see someone with sunglasses?

Doug Nelson 02-04-2005, 04:09 PM Sure, I can tell exactly who it is :) Gary Richardson 02-04-2005, 04:21 PM Mickey Mouse. Doug Nelson 02-04-2005, 05:23 PM Not Porky, not Mickey. Hint: human MBChamberlain 02-04-2005, 05:35 PM elmer fudd? Doug Nelson 02-04-2005, 05:47 PM Ding ding ding ding ding! :)

This New Yorker started off ruff, but her popularity quickly grew ajcutler 02-07-2005, 02:51 PM Olive Oyl (Popeye's Girlfriend)? T Paul 02-07-2005, 02:58 PM Nope, but getting closer...she did appear with Popeye CJ Swartz 02-07-2005, 04:31 PM Don't know if she was a New Yorker, but how about Betty Boop? T Paul 02-07-2005, 06:08 PM You got it CJ!
Betty Boop was born in the early 1930's at the Fleischer Brothers studios in New York.
Betty Boop was first created as a dog character by Grim Natwick and appeared as the girl friend of another dog named Bimbo. Betty's figure was modeled after Mae West's and her singing style taken from Helen Kane the "Boop-Boop-a-Doop" girl.
In the 1933 cartoon "Popeye the Sailor" Betty and Popeye danced the Hula together. CJ Swartz 02-07-2005, 06:42 PM Yippee!! Finally got one -- thanks only to T's helpful hint!
For mine -- a hint: a male MaryLynn 02-07-2005, 07:15 PM Tom Hanks? CJ Swartz 02-07-2005, 07:55 PM No, not Tom Hanks, but about the same age. MaryLynn 02-07-2005, 08:08 PM Ron Howard? CJ Swartz 02-07-2005, 08:17 PM Not Ron Howard, either, although they both show interest and abilities in the same job areas. This guy can show a harder edge than Ron H., though. MaryLynn 02-07-2005, 10:14 PM Now I'm torn between John Travolta and Henry Winkler. Hmmmmm, guess I'll have to sleep on it. :tired: CJ Swartz 02-07-2005, 10:41 PM Hmmm, my response didn't go thru..., let me see if I can remember what I wrote...
It's neither Travolta nor Henry Winkler, though they do show a variety of artistic abilities/interests.
Hint: think motion pictures, talented and successful, but not always popular with some groups.
It's getting to be many folks bedtime, and I have to work tomorrow -- if someone submits a correct answer, you may not get confirmation until after I get off work. :( (I'll try to check in the morning -- don't want to keep anyone waiting for good news!) ajcutler 02-08-2005, 06:18 AM How about Tim Robbins? Sorry I wasn't saying they weren't I was just offering the next little clue. My appologies to Charlie Chaplain, Dick Van Dyke, and Tom Selleck.
It isn't O'Toole or Kelly either.
Next clue: In this picture he is in character. MaryLynn 02-09-2005, 08:34 AM John Wayne? Gary Richardson 02-09-2005, 09:01 AM Burt Lancaster. Doug Nelson 02-09-2005, 09:10 AM Looks a bit like either Moe Howard or someone playing Richard III...Lawrence Olivier? CJ Swartz 02-09-2005, 09:44 AM Harrison Ford? T Paul 02-09-2005, 03:18 PM Audrey Hepburn Gary Richardson 02-09-2005, 03:42 PM Sophia Loren. MaryLynn 02-09-2005, 04:18 PM Much earlier than either Audrey or Sophia, yet still going strong (as of 2000). CJ Swartz 02-09-2005, 05:15 PM That hair looks auburn -- could it be the beautiful Maureen O'Hara? T Paul 02-09-2005, 05:19 PM Lauren Bacall? MaryLynn 02-09-2005, 05:32 PM You're right, CJ. It is Maureen O'Hara, the Queen of Technicolor. CJ Swartz 02-09-2005, 09:19 PM Okay, try this one -- he's definitely Male! I'll even give you another hint -- he's human, not a cartoon character. T Paul 02-09-2005, 10:10 PM John McEnroe ? CJ Swartz 02-09-2005, 11:33 PM NOT John McEnroe --
he's just a bit younger (surprised me, I still think of McEnroe as the brash, loud, KID).
He's mostly been a movie actor -- successfully, by the way. Gary Richardson 02-10-2005, 01:01 AM George W. Bush T Paul 02-10-2005, 04:59 AM Woody Harrelson? Doug Nelson 02-10-2005, 06:09 AM Colin Farrell? CJ Swartz 02-10-2005, 09:51 AM Nope, not Geo. W. Bush -- oh, yeah, he was the "star" of a certain movie, wasn't he!, not Woody Harrelson - about the right age, not Colin Farrell -- (too young).
He's done both action films and romantic films. Think intensity. Janet Petty 02-10-2005, 12:02 PM Jon Voight, Arnold Swarzt(however you spell it); Rutger Hauer? Can you tell I'm just guessing?
Janet CJ Swartz 02-10-2005, 12:09 PM Jon Voight, Arnold Swarzt(however you spell it); Rutger Hauer? Can you tell I'm just guessing?
Janet
Yes, I can tell -- but that's the point of the game, isn't it ;) Doug wants us to make the picture pixilated enough that you can't really tell by looking -- I know the answer, and I can't tell if it's Jon, Arnold, or Rutger -- BUT it's NOT any of them. :(
I'm adding a new, less pixilated view to help you and others figure out which cutie this is. Gary Richardson 02-10-2005, 12:15 PM Sorry CJ, saw your previous message after I'd posted. But George has got to be a pretty good actor in his line of work anyway. Can see your latest image fine, but no idea who it is, but then there's been a lot of American "actors" posted I've never even heard of, I mean, who the ****'s Beaver. CJ Swartz 02-10-2005, 12:25 PM Yes, Dubya must be a better actor than I thought he was to get picked to star in the sequel.
You don't know about the "Beaver"??!! He was the cute little boy in the "typical American family" (the Cleavers; yes, he was "Beaver" Cleaver) on TV here in the 1950's. He got into trouble and tried to get out of it on his own, and finally his parents would find out and help him and tell him that he could always come to them with his problems. Then the next episode, he'd do it again. At the time, most kids wanted to live with the Cleavers. Now, they see it on re-runs, and I don't know whether they like it or not -- but I wish the kids around here were more like Beaver. On his worst day, he was still a very nice kid!! The home development I live in named it's floor plans after famous American TV families -- they offer a Cleaver, a Ricardo (Lucy and Ricky from "I Love Lucy" -- you know Lucy, I bet), the Brady ("The Brady Bunch - a blended family from two widowed people who marry), etc. I live in the "Brady"... But I don't admit it to anyone who's closer than the UK. ;)
Oh, this actor is famous enough that you probably have heard of him -- don't know if you would have gone to see his films. I've only watched a couple on TV, but he's good to look at, and he is a good actor.
Kids are invited to his latest movie -- it's PG. ajcutler 02-10-2005, 12:59 PM He is beginning to look like Harrison Ford
...and thanks CJ for the Beaver description. It appears I'm showing my age when I see that some folks don't know who Beaver is. CJ Swartz 02-10-2005, 01:04 PM He is beginning to look like Harrison Ford

NOT Harrison Ford, but that cutie certainly meets a lot of the clues (action films and romantic films, intense, very good to look at, etc, etc.)
Age has NOTHING to do with it, AJ! ;) Beaver just isn't known in the UK as well as in some other areas of the world. T Paul 02-10-2005, 01:05 PM Dennis Quaid? CJ Swartz 02-10-2005, 01:11 PM Dennis Quaid?
Good guess, T, but Nope! Think darker -- look and mood both.
Unpixilated it a bit more -- he even won an Oscar!
I'm going to walk the dogs -- hope there's a winner by the time we get back! :) ajcutler 02-10-2005, 01:51 PM Billy Bob Thorton Janet Petty 02-10-2005, 02:07 PM Nicholas Cage? Janet -- DUH!! It IS Nicolas Cage!! :wavey: Your turn!
Sorry, AJ -- better luck, next time! :) Gary Richardson 02-10-2005, 03:27 PM CJ. thanks for the run down on Beaver, sadly (or is it gladly) that particular programme did'nt make it this side of the pond. Lucy (yes), Brady Bunch (yes but I never watched them). But you're right, there's no reason I should'nt have got Nicholas Cage. Good post. Janet Petty 02-10-2005, 03:42 PM I'm having a tiny bit of trouble posting. I goofed the first time and when I tried to delete it, the bot says I already have this post. Give me a few minutes to get it back in working order.
Janet Janet Petty 02-10-2005, 03:48 PM I'm actually astonished that I guessed Nicholas Cage correctly. This one is an easy one.
Good luck.

We were neck and neck at the same system time, and I just had my turn, so I deleted my post-- go for it, girl! Janet Petty 02-10-2005, 08:23 PM T. you got it. James Arness was the original "Thing" in the movie made in the early 1950s. Gary Richardson 02-11-2005, 01:00 AM Aaagh! I was going to say James Arness, but since he has'nt been on TV for ages (30 years or more over here) decided it could'nt be him. CJ Swartz 02-11-2005, 01:11 AM Aaagh! I was going to say James Arness, but since he has'nt been on TV for ages (30 years or more over here) decided it could'nt be him.
Gary, don't you get re-runs??!!
One of my favorite shows is "What's My Line?" -- the original shows from the early '50's-early '60's. They're shown on cable TV (very early in the a.m., so I have to videotape them for later review). They sometimes have someone from the UK's version of the show on also -- so I KNOW you've heard of it! ;)
More to the point, "Gunsmoke" with Jim Arness is shown daily, and he's also made TV movies more recently than the '70's. He starred in a re-make of "Red River" in the late '80's. Maybe they'll show that sometime on the BBC. We get your "Keeping Up Appearances" over here... Gary Richardson 02-11-2005, 01:36 AM The re-runs we get are generally of old BBC programmes, and with the exception of Dr Who, are generally of newer vintage. Many youngsters over here will probably never of heard of Gunsmoke, and will certainly not know who James Arness is, the fact that I do just demonstrates my age. Keeping Up Appearances stopped playing here quite some years ago. There are currently re-runs on satellite. What's my line was both a radio and a TV show. Has'nt been shown on TV for quite a while, not too sure whether its still on Radio 4 or not. Axleuk 02-11-2005, 01:48 AM James who ? Gary Richardson 02-11-2005, 02:37 AM See what I mean. See what I mean.
