Just tried to simplify to the basic subject... cropped a bit, flipped it, made a line art base, added a layer mask and painted in a bit with a rough texture brush.

Spent too long in Painter with this...mainly used Oils/Details Oils Brush 15. Think I used a camel brush on the cat. The bg was done in Paint Shop Pro.

I love this photo.
Gorgeous Painter work as usual, Neve. I did this one in Paint Shop Pro & Photoshop, made a line drawing overlay and then used Dry Brush, crosshatch, & Watercolor filters on the lower layer and finally a mask frame and sandstone texture.

"Dreaming of Home"

So many steps, experimented a lot. This image made me think about how lonely and homesick our troops must be at times.

Usual image prep: adjusted levels, hue and saturation, and added a slight buzz. Then I ran Mike Finn's PopArtist, and used the Ansiotropic layer as my base image.

Ran Picasso's Last Word several times. Used the history brush to bring back the soldier and the cat part way. Then added a solid color adjustment layer, and painted on the mask with a watercolor brush.

I thought the last step would be to add texture, but when I faded the texture using hard light, I liked the result. So I kept it, and added texture to that.

I think that's all.

Didn't do much to it really. I tried to give more focus to the man's face and the kitten without making it so obvious.

Curves, levels, and selective color adj. layers on man and kitten only.
Linked and Merged.
Seperated everything but the man and foreground and blurred the background portion of it slightly.
Used Filter->Paint Daubs ( I think? ) with high detail and smallest brush on the seperated selection layers so as to minimize the detail of the wall and rear soldier.

As always, this is so fun to participate in. Some results are better than others, but it's all a process.

When I saw this I had to have a go.
We've just found out some of our lads will be coming back home from Iraq soon - great news.

1st lucis and cutout filter.
2nd art history brush.
3rd pencil sketch.

I am new at this, so don't be too hard on me. This is what I could come up with.
Each color represent the situation.

Peter -- I like the one in the middle best -- mainly because it shows the young man's face most, and that is such an important part of this image.

Steve -- nicely done.

Gaulois -- we're never hard on anyone who's submitting a creative interpretation. :)

Thank you CJ. That original is quite an image. My favorite photos are mood photos that tell a story. Probably comes from my having shot a lot of spot news photos, I guess.

had a go at this also:

Did a sketch and layered over original to bring back just a touch of color. Might have been better converted to B&W to keep the somber but compassionate mood.

Thanks much.

Steve C.

I don't have your spot news experience, but I share your preference for mood photos that tell a story. This one brings so many reactions and emotions to the surface -- it was a great capture.

Used GIMP's Retinex filter to fake a Lucis, and then ported the result into Photoshop and ran ePaperPress's Pen and Ink Action. A few other color/sat enhancements as well. :)

I have a sketch script that I got from someplace a good while ago.

As for the background....a matter of preference. To me it adds to the story the photo tells. Looks like they were searching this building and the soldier with the cat was the first one back out and had a few minutes to take a break after being a part of the search party.

thanks, steve.

it was lk's that i made the background comment on. yours is more subdued.
