Ok, I've tried this a couple of times but with not much success. Not on portraits but on still life and landscapes, but without much success. I'm missing something. I think it may be in step 9, smudging the grey areas. I've tried with the smudge tool but I'm obviously not getting how much or what you're aiming for with this step. Any chance you could just post an image of this step so I can see what you're aiming for?
