Soft Light Layer Example

Posted 10-06-2008 at 05:06 AM by cricket1961
On a thread about D&B techniques, I was asked to post a example of what one of my soft light layers looks like. Here is the link to that thread, the post is on the 3rd page.

For those not wanting to go there, but please do, here is the shot posted.

Chris, I'm curious as to why you used a bit of color on this layer, rather than just black or white. What additional value does that provide? (And I *love* seeing the layer, btw. I've got a bit of a "thing" for looking at soft light layers...I find them fascinating...and a great way to reveal where you're sloppier than you think, in your work. Or that's the case with me, anyway! )

I use a bunch of color now and then to diminish color casts in small areas. Sometimes white or black just leaves a bit of residue that I don't care for.

That makes sense. I thought I'd read someone (maybe you?) saying that in a thread, a long time ago...never tried it myself, though, although I do sometimes encounter the color shift issue. I'll have to give it a try!
