Opus Musivum

Toying with Dr. di Blasi's cool java program for creating these cool mosaic forms. I actually just created a white w/ black grout plate which depends on a solid white target and heavily depends on input Edge mask and did additional process in GIMP (details here as well as completed rendition if you scroll down).

Re: Opus Musivum

That's nice Lyle! The discontinued Alien Skin Xenofex did a mosaic effect.

Re: Opus Musivum

Sad they discontinued it but I wouldn't have paid over $100 for this ($15 maybe; lol). Thanks for the comments.

Re: Opus Musivum

That was just one of many effects it did. I still use it when I need TV scan lines and such.

Re: Opus Musivum

Ah; still it's not a PostworkShop like program so at most, $35 to $45 maybe (and that's pushing it). I already knew about Xenofex but just forgot about it (tend to forget about expensive things that I'm unwilling to buy; lol). I do like the mosaic renders that it is able to do though. The free program that I'm using has size constraint limitations (why Dr. di Blasi put those constraints in only he really knows). Still, free is always what I look for but do and have paid for plugins such as Flaming Pear's India Ink and Mr. Contrast as well as Amphisoft's Xylograph filters among the few so I'm not against buying cool plugins but they have to fit a niche (for me) and be cost effective since retouching is a pure hobby which is one of my joys.

Re: Opus Musivum

Thanks to a happy accident, I can now easily render these in GIMP (G'MIC). Click here for a tutorial.

Re: Opus Musivum

For those interested, Diego automated my flow and did a pretty good job doing so.
