| | | Feb 07 Contest February 07 Contest - February brings a Photo Art contest. Your challenge this month is to turn the provided photo into a “Vector-style” graphic.
Now this won’t be as simple as posterizing the image and it will take more finesse than just using the cutout or Buzz filter. I need to stress that this is not a filter contest. You are expected to use the selection tool of your choice to create areas and fill with solid colors (no gradients/blends/mixes). So brush up on your selection skills and don’t fear the pen tool. There are numerous tutorials out there so if you haven’t done this before here’s your chance to try something new.
Now for those without vector programs, you can make your image VECTOR-like. Just use your program's selection tools with zero feather and then a solid fill. Sample Tutorial
This is written for Illustrator, but it should work in Photoshop: Imitating A Scanner Darkly Graphic-style Download Image: Green Vector Photo: from Stock.Xchng Photographer: Thomas Egger (djtomegg69) Quote: Prize is a copy of LightShop, donated by AKVIS:
People by their nature are attracted by things that shine, sparkle, glow and glitter. A light effect draws attention and animates any photo.
AKVIS LightShop helps you create amazing light effects: lightning in a stormy sky, a colorful rainbow over a city, a reflection on a raindrop, the glow on smoldering wood in a fire-place, alien signs blazing in the night sky, flares on the sun, the lights of distant planets, fireworks - wherever your imagination may take you!
| THE RULES:
1. Contest will run from 1 Feb to 21 Feb 2007. Deadline for entries is 6pm EST 21 Feb 2007.
2. I will not answer questions concerning the rules. Interpretation of the rules is as important as execution.
3. Tasks: Quote:
* Turn the provided photo into a “vector-style” graphic.
* 12 Color limit plus black, but user's choice.
* No gradients or mixed colors. Solid colors only.
* Final image must be exactly 800 pixels wide and 640 pixels high.
| 4. When you submit your entry put your username in the filename (ie: tpaul.jpg). This is so users can save the images to a local directory and remember who did what--important when it comes time to vote.
5. Post your entries to this thread. Links will not be accepted. Please restrict your comments, questions or discussion to the Feb 07 Contest Discussion thread. Inappropriately placed posts will be deleted.
6. Only one entry per person. You can change your entry up to the deadline.
7. Voting will run from 22 Feb to 28 Feb 2007. Only those with entries may vote.
8. Voting:
* Submit the 5 best entries (by artist name) in order, starting with your favorite.
* You cannot vote for your own image.
* Once you have voted, you cannot change your votes.
Finally, please remember that this is a friendly contest and suppose to be a learning experience. Tips and suggestions to help others are highly encouraged. Also please don’t limit your comments to just the top 5 when you vote. Most members are eager for feedback about their images, so remember to help each other out. TIP: Save your entry as a GIF file.
When you save an image as a JPG...even if it is of a 12-color image, it can/will create other colors as it averages pixels (part of the compression).

| | | Re: Feb 07 Contest This is my first vexel, I'm sure it shows. I've wanted to try one of these for a while but just couldn't find the motivation. So here's my stab, I will probably change it, possibly even scrap it and start all over. :P Edit 1: Too many colors, now reduced to twelve (providing I counted right). Edit 2: Adding Color Table
T Paul, does this help or would you like the colors listed instead?
