Re: Apr 07 Contest Discussion

Note the size requirements for this month's challenge. It is not the easy resize that it has been in the past. It's going to take a little thought and perhaps artistic talent to fill the empty space. Have fun!

Re: Apr 07 Contest Discussion

In looking at the "old masters", especially Vermeer's Milk Maid one of my favorite pieces that I even did in needlepoint years ago - so much of their style is built around light. Extreem darks and lights, lots of contrast, and with age comes texture. Solid brush strokes, heavy application of paint, no white spaces. Large blocks of color are also part of the style.

I found this a very big challenge this month. Thanks for the go, T. Paul

Well the Dutch Master Style idea goes to Doug. I located the photo and Doug suggested the idea. It's a team effort!

Re: Apr 07 Contest Discussion

Hi Swampy,

I read your excellent synopsis of the Dutch Masters style after completing my entry. Wish I had read it before

I was never a fan of these paintings until a couple of years ago, when I went to an art museum in New York City and saw the original paintings. They are dark for my taste, but the realistic details in them, and the play of light is incredible.

Just a warning that you need to rename your image to avoid being disqualified.

Entry has been renamed.

"Just a warning that you need to resize your images to avoid being disqualified."

Can I replace my image and if so, how do I do it, or do i have to delete my message and re-submit with the resized image?

Re: Apr 07 Contest Discussion

Gerry,

You can replace the entry.

Go to your original post, and click “Edit.”

In the next screen click “Go Advanced.”

In that screen, leave the “Do Not Delete Message” option checked and scroll to “Current Attachments.” Click “Remove” to delete your current entry.

When it has been removed, click on “Upload” and upload your revised entry.

Your original message will remain with the new file attached.

Re: Apr 07 Contest Discussion

From the photographer:

Quote:
My top five - that was hard to pick, but in order of choice:

These first two really shine - stand out above the rest in my opinion:

1) LonK
2) CathyH
3) TPaul
4) woodenbender
5) Cassidy2

Many of these five emulate my own personal style, which is probably why I love them so much. The others are good, and they would probably all make wonderful prints.

I enjoyed that a great deal Thank you so much for sharing the results with me.

Congrats Lonk, well done. Didn't get a chance to vote, days just passed so quickly. So many great entries can't believe it's May already, what happened to April?

Re: Apr 07 Contest Discussion

I'm flattered and honored. Many thanks to all the great folks at RP, the talented artists who entered this contest and especially those who voted for my entry. What a great prize, too.

It just goes to show that even a rank amateur like me, who uses a older, simple image editor (PhotoImpact 8), can occasionally create something of interest.

I made at least a dozen mockups with different backgrounds and bodies (clothing/pose) for the girl. I've attached the primary elements finally used.
1. A photorealistic illustration of an Italian villa courtyard (A Poser scene).
2. A photo of my Great-aunt, circa 1902. I borrowed (and colorized) her dress.

I was comfortable with my choices since the contest criteria was to mimic the "style" of the masters, not necessarily the time and location. To me this meant I should concentrate on the staging and lighting that might be expected.

Once I assembled the composition, I did quite a bit of PWL for lighting style and congruity. I made several masked passes with Impressionist (#djrOil24) for the major painterly rendering and followed with some detail brushing/smudging.

This was a lot of fun!
