Re: Feb 08 Contest Votes

HI I think everyone did a great job on this.
Lonk - I really like the angle and the background coloration, all though the background was suppose to be black. That is cool how you changed the color.
Saby I like the kind of grundgy look, but it is still photographic, nice graphic touch with the large close up of the wheel.
Ziiphra - I like it, it is simple and clean, nice and believable reflection, but maybe a little to strong.
Gezzunder - Nice choice for size and crop. I like the shadow, you did a great job of removing the wheel lock.
Dataflow - Well done, simple and clean, good relfection.

Re: Feb 08 Contest Votes

1. LonK: like that you change the color of bike plus the angle also the reflection on ground(points off because the front wheel still had blue on it)

2. Ziaphra: it was cleanly cut and the bike blended in with the background

3. 03Classic: again it was clean cut and bike edges matched up to the background.
i didnt put you second because of the reflection on the side of the bike.

4. saby: liked the reflection of the bike. i did like the background but i put you fourth because your background doesnt follow the rules of comp.

5. CathyH: i put this 1 fifth because the glass on the bike was removed.
other then that its ok.

Re: Feb 08 Contest Votes

1. Ziaphra: Clean cut, too much colour left from back ground
2. Dataflow: Good cut, didn't like reflections left on fairing, bad aspect on bike reflection
3. Saby: Great concept but no longer a photo as per requirements
4. Classic: Overprocessed, lacks reality/sparkle
5. LonK: Nice idea to change the colour, but it looks blurred, needs more definition

I really liked Saby's entry but couldn't vote for it as I didn't believe it followed the requirements by being too graphic in nature.

Re: Feb 08 Contest Votes

Ok...a quick re-cap of the rules: The graphic department has been tasked to create a high quality poster to advertise their client’s new motorcycle. Two images have been provided to work from. The background should be black and text will be added by the advertisement department later.

Tasks:
Use a single image or combination of the two to create a high quality advertisement poster
No text
Black background
Image(s) should remain as photograph(s). Do not turn into artistic graphics.

Regarding the rules above and the fact that obviously the fact that client wants to advertise the bike as is (as far as I am aware anyway), I voted only on those that followed the rules to the letter.

1. saby - nice and clean and will work with the background as is. Could have a bit more room for the text though.
2. Swampy - has left enough room for the text.
3. dataflow - not quite enough room for text but can be adjusted.
4. 03Classic - not enough room for text and the tyres look flat.
5. K_GiMiNi_M - Like the idea

As a side note, I absolutely LOVE LonK's but this is a red bike after all.

Re: Feb 08 Contest Votes

(Jotted down my votes last weekend and almost forgot to post them!)

I think an underlying goal of the contest was to test one's skill with extracting the motorcycle from the busy background. Everyone did a pretty good job with that. It's a bit more difficult to evaluate composition because it would very much depend on the ad copy, which the entrants were not privy to. Including a reflection seemed a popular trend. This is not a straight forward process. Some did better than others in this respect.

1 - K_GiMiNi_M. Very imaginative rendition. The burning tire effect is expressive and well done. The motion blur though, seems a bit odd since there is no driver. Where'd the windscreen go? I would have liked to see the lock removed.
2 - Gezzunder. The tight crop is a good emphasis tactic in this case. The ground shadow is well done. Convincing job removing the wheel lock, but you neglected to remove the shadow it cast on the rim.
3 - Ziaphra. The spotlighting really makes the bike pop. Most convincing reflection, though a bit too distinct IMO. I find sharpening halos distracting. Though not particularly noticeable, you failed to black out the background from the holes in the brake disk. I would have liked to see the lock removed.
4 - saby. I really like your rendition. The perspective change and background wheel detail hint make for a bold composition. Because of the compositing and exaggerated contrast, I do think it looks more illustrative than photographic though.
5 - dataflow. Nice job overall. I feel the reflection is compressed vertically a bit too much. You also neglected to remove the shadow cast by the removed lock on the rim.

Re: Feb 08 Contest Votes

1. Ziaphra: Like the spot light, meets the requirements the best, I feel it shows off the bike for an advert
2. LonK: Like the paint, a bit flashy for me if I am shopping for a bike, was first until I saw the spot light
3. K_GiMiNi_M: Like the idea, but tough to go fast with a wheel lock
4. dataflow: Bike appears to float off the ground, but good work
5. saby: Nice work, but a bit outside the params
