| | | Re: May 08 Contest Votes Hi everyone great job.
1. r_dg the swirl of color and the lantern are great
2. mikkimicole - I like the illustrated look, the monochromatic color and swirls are real nice.
3. K_Gimini_M - nice over all color and I like the little people peeking out.
4. asime - I like the dress, although the bodice needed more details.
5. Lonk - nice composition really I really like the background landscape.
Honorable mention: Lurch - I liked the whiteness of the horse and the way you left room for the text of the book.
Ruzzez - I thought the rainbow circle gave it a nice feel of separation from the background.
Crazyfly - I think the color and the light streaks were good but the plastic wrap on the horse was to much.
Photob - I liked the beads you put into her hair.
That was a fun contest. |

| | | Re: May 08 Contest Votes Hello, this was a nice contest with nice works.
01. LonK - the mystery air and the quality of his work
02. r_dg - the golden mist
03. asmara - simple and concise
04. CathyH - that little pixie in the girl's hand
05. K_GiMiNi_M - the dark atmosphere
I also loved the white horse in Lurch's cover.

| | | Re: May 08 Contest Votes Had I heard about the book and gone to a store to look for it, which cover image would most inspire me to buy the book? I'd look for something with a fantasy theme, something colorful. I'd expect a cover that provides a glimpse into the story within.
1. CathyH -- An obvious fantasy representation. The winged horse is cliche, but to the point (though the far wing looks a bit awkward). Nice, creative lighting elements, but bothersome that the direction of the main lighting is at odds (coming from the right in the background, but from the left on the subject).
2. lcramer53 -- Certainly "cartoonish", but the composite includes many elements of the tale. The new dress is proper and the whole composition nicely balanced. Could be improved, I think, if the various elements interacted more, i.e. less like a "montage" of disparate objects.
The remaining entries seemed to concentrate on just a girl and a horse -- not what I think best exemplifies what the story is supposedly about.
3. K_GiMiNi_M -- Dramatic contrast. Nice to see a couple of tiny forset "inhabitants", though I had to look hard to notice them.
4. asims28 -- Bold complimentary colors. The princess gown is nicely done. I feel the crop is too tight/crowded, leaving little room for title text.
5. crazyfly1 -- Luminous, airy, yet somehow mysterious. The plastic/ice blanket overlay is interesting, but I'm not really understanding how it relates. |

| | | Re: May 08 Contest Votes I'm a long-time reader of sci fi/fantasy and was a little bemused by how many entrants equated fantasy with fairies and fairy dust sparkles, which mostly belong in children's books. So my voting was determined by a combination of composition and faithfulness to the genre.
1. lonk - has the right over-the-top feeling, good composition, and room for print. But scratch those doggone fairies!
2. r_dg - definitely like a fantasy book cover, but there's no room for print.
3. photob - interesting composition with good fantasy elements
4. crazyfly - interesting image, though a little psychedelic
5. eeny, meeny, miny, K_GiMiNi (I'd do a tie with laura.lala and mikkimicole if I thought I could get away with it) - all serviceable, true to the genre. |
