Re: June 2008 Contest Discussion

i chose the colors in a different way, i based my decition looking at what kind of objects were there and the subject of the picture in this case "ballerinas" so usually in that kind of time they used a lot of pastels and i tought in giving them an old look so i used low saturated colors like pink yellow and other colors in that palette.

Lonnie, yours is a great colorization, but I wish you had cleaned up the junk in the wall. I know it was part of the original, but I found it very distracting.

Re: June 2008 Contest Discussion

Thanks, Swampy. That background looked to be a mottle painted wall typical of studio settings. Because it is more or less a signature element of portraits of that era, I actually emphasized "the junk" just a bit.

I thought about taking that approach, Lonnie. I guess I'm in such a habit of "cleaning things up" that I couldn't live with the look. LOL

Re: June 2008 Contest Discussion

In a colorization challenge how much cleaning up should be done? I am new and would like to know when it changes from colorization to restoration or photo_art.

Re: June 2008 Contest Discussion

That's actually a good question. Let me put it this way, Ruzzez. If you are going to get an expensive new paint job for your classic car, would you repair that wrinkled fender, patch those rust spots, fix any dents and dings?

The key to doing a convincing colorization is proper preparation of the base image. So, yes, I'd say appropriate restoration and clean up would be prerequisites in most cases.

Regarding photoart, of course, you can do pretty much whatever you please. Since this contest calls for a "realistic colorization", that is not really applicable.

Re: June 2008 Contest Discussion

I'd have to agree, Craig. It's also great to note that so many are revisiting their entries, making significant improvements. For the most part, voting is going to be quite a difficult task requiring detailed scrutiny of each entry!
