June 2008 Contest - Colorization

June 08 – Contest

This month is a colorization contest. Colorize the provided Black & White photo.

~Photo from the Library of Congress Web Site.

If you're having trouble downloading the image, try right clicking (or Cmd/Ctrl clicking) on the link and using "Save Target As" (or "Save Link As").

New to the contests? Please review the FAQs

Prize: Coloriage v5 Home Deluxe (Plugin+Standalone) donated by AKVIS

Quote:
Prize Description: Breathe life into your black and white photos with AKVIS Coloriage!
  • AKVIS presents the cutting edge technology of automatic photo colorizing that will change your ideas about image colorization forever!

  • AKVIS Coloriage manipulates colors of an image: from colorizing old black and white photos from your family archive to replacing colors in your color photos.

  • Make a present for your grandmother by adding color to her school photo, replace the colors of your car to see how it would look in scarlet, see how you will look if you dye your hair red.

  • AKVIS Coloriage is as easy to use as a coloring book. No layers manipulation, no complicated techniques, no more hours of frustration attempting to get just the look you want - everything is done with a few brush strokes. Indicate the desired colors by the stroke of the brush; the program does the rest of the work: recognizes the object's border and tailors the new color to the grayscale tones of the initial picture.

THE RULES:

1. Contest will run from 2 June to 23 June 08. Deadline for entries is 5pm EDT.

2. I will not answer questions concerning the rules. Interpretation of the rules is as important as execution.

3. Tasks:

Quote:
*Realistically colorize the provided photo.

*Do not add a frame

*Final image must be exactly 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high (cropping may be required).
4. When you submit your entry put your username in the filename (ie: tpaul.jpg). This is so users can save the images to a local directory and remember who did what--important when it comes time to vote.

5. Post your entries to this thread. Links will not be accepted. Please restrict your comments, questions or discussion to the June 08 Contest Discussion thread. Inappropriately placed posts will be deleted.

6. Only one entry per person. You can change your entry up to the deadline.

7. Voting will run from 24 June to 30 June. Only those with entries may vote.

8. Voting:
* Submit the 5 best entries (by artist name) in order, starting with your favorite.
* You cannot vote for your own image.
* Once you have voted, you cannot change your votes.

Finally, please remember that this is a friendly contest and suppose to be a learning experience. Tips and suggestions to help others are highly encouraged. Also please don’t limit your comments to just the top 5 when you vote. Most members are eager for feedback about their images, so remember to help each other out.

Re: June 2008 Contest - Colorization

Hi everyone,
Love the image r dg.
Nothing new from me, I just hand coloured this one. It's my first entry here.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the numerous ways we all attack it.

Re: June 2008 Contest - Colorization

I debated how i wanted to color this. But then i noticed the rules say "Realistically colorize the provided photo"
Then i thought does that imply all the amazing stuff you can do in photoshop? Or if someone during that time frame was to hand color the image?

So i decided to go with a look that would look like a person hand colored the image during the time the photo was taken. Looks colorless compared to some of the entries, but i was trying to stay true to a hand tinted image look.

This is my color version of the ballet dancers. While working I imagined they were Prima Ballerinas at the Diaghilev Ballet Company...

Good luck to all participants.

This is my first attempt at coloring a picture. Took much longer than I thought it would. But I did learn a lot doing it.

Re: June 2008 Contest - Colorization

I couldn't resist this wonderful photo

I did so many variations in color on it that I don't know which one I like now, so here's the latest one, not sure if it's the one I like best though, lol.

Edit: changed to a more saturated version.

Every entry is great. I tried to stay with the period look of a hand tinted photo and kept the colors on the muted side.
