Re: Mar 2010 Contest Votes
Excellent work by one and all, but the devil is in the details.

1. EileenC - Overall it looks great, but several details need attention: The last number on the UNITS PER HOUR ring is 400, not 100; the hour and minute hands are black/white in the source, not gold; the second hand is always on top of the hour and minute hands. I do like the grounding shadow.

2. acpgraphics - I liked the surface reflection on your first entry; hands need shadows; metal still looks somewhat dirty/blotchy. A grounding shadow would help.

3. sveltepig - Clean metal work, but I think it's too yellow; grounding shadow is not very convincing (bottom surface of band would darken as it curves under). Retyping text is a valid technique, but matching the font and size is important (e.g. the tag lines are much wider than source and your 1's on the UNITS PER HOUR ring now have serifs).

4. veralisa - I preferred your first entry (less harsh/blotchy contrast). Good grounding shadow. I believe the source watch is all gold, not duo-tone. (And the brief does state "Final image should look like a shiny new gold watch"). Logos need special attention -- be careful not to distort.

5. CUPCAKE - I feel it's too yellow; too saturated; hands need shadows; A grounding shadow or reflection would help.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Mar 2010 Contest Votes
I enjoyed the variety of techniques used and the chance to see how others work.

1. LonK - Nice repair of the metal. I like the gold tones and the shadows. You put a lot of time and thought into this and it shows.

2. acpgraphics - I loved the reflection! The metal looks a little blotchy though.

3. sveltpig - The metal work is consistent but too bright yellow/orange. The white gold rim around the glass is now yellow.

4. veralisa - Nice shadow. The bracelet tones don't seem yellow gold enough. The outer ring looks wavy. The numbers look great though.

5. Cupcake - It has a clean look but is too yellow. The fingerprints are still noticeable. I would have liked to see some shadows on the hands and a grounding shadow.

6. Ruzzez - The watch is a little dark, flat and "grey". It would have benefited from opening it up a little and warming it. The shadow wouldn't go all way around the watch.

This was a great challenge from real life.

1. acpgraphics... bright bezel , nice reflection at bottom

2. eileen ... shine and shadow at bottom looks nice but the hands have changed color

3. LonK .......... beautiful sheen, very precise

4. sveltpig ... clear face but overall tone is quite bright

5. cupcake... nice shiny bezel , very yellow face, where is the shadow or reflection?

HM: ruzzez a very deep gold, almost bronze and the first brave one to post!

my votes as follows:
1. EileenC
2. lonK
3. acgraphics
5. veralisa

Eileen, I think your retouch is very effective. The watch hands are the wrong colour, though.

LonK I love the attempt to show the glass on the face - none of the rest of us managed it at all. The flipping for balance works well on top, but on the bottom looks unreal and rather liquified.

acgraphics, CUPCAKE, veralisa - nice work.

russez, I thnk your image is just too dark to judge.

This was fun and good practice, I only wish I had more time to play. Everyone did a nice job on a difficult image.
