Re: Oct 2011 Contest Votes

This was a fun contest.
1) Joeven - Nice treatment of pumpkins and background. Good composition.
2) gimini_1 - Nicely simplified. The raven is really well done.
3) Palms - The witch petting her black cat is a cute addition. I would like to see it without the ghost in the top right hand corner, he seems to draw me away from the witch.
4) Fenix - Great old movie feel.
5) Veralisa - I like the flies and bugs on the frame they are all so creepy.

Honorable mention to the rest, and a quick comment.
Cupcake - On my screen it is very dark, it would be hard to see the details on a poster.
Jeremy - Your Jack-O-lanterns are well carved and illuminated. But the lady ghost seems out of proportion or something.
Lonk - Very scary, them old boys sitting around with one more for the road. The background is great, but the skeletons don't seem to blend in.

Re: Oct 2011 Contest Votes

Great job by all. Good luck.

1. jeremy1986 - Nicely balanced composition. I like the variety of jack-o-lantern faces and the additional elements. The ghostly maiden looks sad and lonely. Lighting is a bit off with the source (moon) directly behind yet pumpkins lit from right.

2. palms - Charming witch. Her familiar seems to appreciate her attention but is he a bit blurry? Confusing lighting, pumpkins lit from right but witch lit from front. Foreground quite bright against such a dark background. The scale/perspective of the background doesn't seem to fit the scene properly.

3. CathyH - Very appealing scene, likely to appeal to kids. Is the mist a bit bright? I think the large pumpkin in the foreground would blend better with the scene if it were more photorealistic. Aren't the bats somewhat huge compared to the flying witch?

4. gimini_1 - Reminds of Poe's 'The Raven'. Nicely illustrated with consistent lighting. Quickly sketched cobweb could use more attention and the sky just appears unfinished.

5. joeven - Very clean image, more illustrated than photorealistic. Not sure why you flipped the source? Lighting is puzzling with moon behind, the bright lightning bolt on the right, yet pumpkins brightly lit from left.

Veralisa - I had to chuckle at 'Hammond Eggs'. I'm not sure the framing works and the varied fly sizing is bothersome, as is the lime green glow at the bottom.

fenix - Nice idea, though perhaps more contrast would work better and some variety rather than the same face on all the pumpkins.

cupcake - Spooky looking, but too dark I feel. Not sure of the source of the neon blue high-lighting.

Re: Oct 2011 Contest Votes

Excellent work by all! You all created some very spooky pumpkin patches.
Joeven: I love the rich color of the pumpkins and the spooky skeleton in the grave. The skeleton’s glowing eyes are a great touch.

Fenix: That must have been a lot of carving to create all those Jack –o’-lanterns. (smile)

Cupcake: A dark and spooky night scene. I can almost feel the cold silent breeze and hear the distant hoot of an owl.

Jeremy1986: Love all the different Jack-o’-lantern faces.

Veralisa: A fun entry with lots of spooky bugs (yuck)!

CathyH: Definitely a family friendly entry. I love how the large brightly colored jack- o’-lantern invites you in and then the color fades to meet bats and a flying witch.

Palms: A fun Halloween theme entry complete with a witch and her black cat. I almost missed the ghostly faces.

LonK: I always wondered where the skeletons went to just hang out and drink a brew or two.

Gimini_1: A strong graphic feel to this one with a touch of Edgar Allen Poe…Quoth the raven, “Nevermore.”
And the winner is....

Joeven!

LonK - 21
gimini_1 - 21
CathyH - 18
fenix - 16
