Re: Aug-Sep 2014 Merge Channels Contest

Trees are probably not anything like a blue spruce or all that green either. They are lumber firs, maybe even like a Ponderosa pine. I think someone on here has done some history of the photo. Knowing where, geographically, this crew was working would help to identify the tree type. Generally speaking - I don't think the trees look realistic when they get overly green needles.

Amazing job on that. How long did that take?

designer74... very nice. A little too colorful, and bit over saturated for me, but to each his own. I like your take a lot. If you are satisfied with the hue and tone, I would concentrate on their eyes. Each still has red eyes. They are fairly pales skinned caucasians, with a few appearing to have lightly colored eyes - most likely blue. You will have to do some local channel swapping and try to get some of the eye lash line and pupil detail into the black channel. At least that is what I did, temporarily converting to CMYK, to have the 4th K channel available to me. Once I had most of the shape an detail in there, I went back to RGB, and then colorized the irises a bit. You might want to try something similar.

designer74... a couple of the eye treatments on the men I referenced. You may or may not like.

Not long at all to "take" each pic, but hours and hours and hours to align and process.

Re: Aug-Sep 2014 Contest Discussion

The information at the LOC on the method used for this photo is pretty impressive. They have info on digitization, too: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/prok/ That site contains a link to a high res collection:
http://www.prokudin-gorsky.ru

This holiday has me back at it correcting color casts. The LOC color version doesn't quite equal what I'm seeing on the RetouchPro site:

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that my image was too red. Thats what happens when you're working late. I updated my images with an improved version. Not as advanced technique as yours but I have real work to do today and can't spend any more time on this.

Btw, I kept warmth in the picture because the photo was taken late in the day (based on shadows). As you know, as the sun nears the horizon its white light becomes orange and all colors intensify. I was keeping this in mind as I adjusted colors.

Tom

Some really cool images to look at. Interesting that even these had lots of color aberrations and faded edges. Thanks for sharing.
