critique this skin

just playing around with layers on this photo ,the skin is probably soft for a guy let me know what you think

Way to soft. There's little realism left especially around the details of the nose etc.

Why not just use the healing brush in another layer with the "sample all layers" option on?

Hi zganie,

I think you should use the shadow/highlight filter to make the face more visible. You are trying to retouch a not so perfect pic, and getting a not so perfect result.

I have attached my attempt, but I don't get much experience with different tones of skin.

Zganie,

The image has a rather shallow depth of field so applying too much blur to the skin can make the overall impression soft. As Alison suggested, I also enhanced the image a bit using Kodak Sho Pro, made a hue sat adj, contrast adj., lightened the teeth and eyes, some sharpening, healing brush and painted in a small amount of noise on the facial area.

If I were doing this for this individual, I would have left the larger scars which are a part of who he is.
