Raise + Raze = RAIZE

I made this poster for my church's youth group for their upcoming winter retreat. It was my first time doing a poster cause i've been learning retouch work, but tell me what you guys think.

Hi 12jc,

The text does nothing for me, but it may look good poster size. I like the overall concept ..... not the text though.

Re: Raise + Raze = RAIZE

Like Alison i like the concept very much, I took another look after reading what Alison said about the text, and agree the text does not look right, you cant really tell the difference between the R and A ( that happens a couple of times ) if you saved your layers try a different text and maybe a tad higher

Re: Raise + Raze = RAIZE

Personally, I find the poster scarry. Fists raised? Looks more like a riot scene than a worship scene. And no women? It appears all the bodies are men. Black and White? Cheaper to print probably, but not as eye catching as using some color. I also agree with others about the selection of font face. The whole thing reminds me of the 1984 Apple ad before the hammer thrower adds some life and color. Depressing!

Re: Raise + Raze = RAIZE

hhi,
this my opinion for what it worth....

The technical aspects of the poster looks good

However... the artistry bother me a little...

when I think of a youth group, a retreat, a workshop... I think of terms of happiness, joy, being among friends. and generally todays christians youths is more hip than the tradional storic youths of years past...

the poster give me a dark, forbodden, mystery feeling about it... no happiness or joy

also curious if a portrait format instead of a landscape format, if the protrait would work better I think it whould give you more room to work..

any way those are my thoughts

Re: Raise + Raze = RAIZE

Raize: to irritate or anger

Raze: to destroy or tear down

The image could fit with either of those definitions. The men's arms could be raised to "praise" (what one usually thinks of doing in a church) or "to destroy". (Are all attendees young men?) Swampy - good catch on that aspect, as well as others.

The less focused light area draws my attention to the center of the poster.

The typeface is "cool" but the purpose of text is to be read, and it is not easily scanned by the eye.

I had to look up the Bible reference -- will your target audience all recognize it and how does it relate in your/their mind to your/their interpretation of "Raize"?

12JC, don't let us scare you off. Technically, your poster is well done. I think that most folks, so far, are confused by the incongruities of subject matter and the visual.

Re: Raise + Raze = RAIZE

Why exactly did you use the Spiderman movie font?
