Use of Flare in my images

I always thought that lens flare, and sun light made a picture to a certain degree, more interesting if executed in a creative fashion. Which is always an opinion. I shot this image on the way home from work, and after some review, I felt it could use some sprucing up. How could I make this image better, and what mistakes do you see in the photograph? Please be brutal about your thought processes, because I depend on them for real growth. Thanks.

Love your work, make it level.
The flare is not needed to make this a great photo.

Re: Use of Flare in my images

I have about as much use for a Lens Flare filter as I would for, say, a Flash-Didn't-Fire filter, or an Oops-I-Was-Focused-on-the-Background filter, a Used-Too-Long-an-Exposure-Time-Without-a-Tripod filter, or an Accidentally-Pressed-the-Shutter-when-the-Camera-was-Pointed-at-the-Ground filter.

You get the idea.

But that's just me.

I, me, myself < love lens flare in the right image. Some do, some don't, some will, some won't. ... I feel it's a bit overdone in the top left with all the "sun spikes". I love the optical flare in the bottom right but the last one near the middle of the image that finds itself right over the last power pole. I don't like that one, it washes out too much.

I have never seen square lens flare in real life. Doesn't mean it can't happen...maybe from a square sun or something. : )

Yeah, the square flare is weird. You've got some off colors in the clouds and purple fringing on the frame of the car too.

I've been staring and staring trying to figure out what seems off about the shot though, and while I don't like the flare...that's not it exactly. I think it's in the wrong spot, and wrong situation.

Let me explain...There are no harsh shadows in the image, yet you have the sun in the upper left...blasting everything with light. You're not going to get global soft lighting unless the sun is behind a cloud, and if it is...you won't get much of a flare. This is incongruent. Looking at the clouds we find another inconsistency, they are lit from a high angle (as is the guard rail) and your "sun" is relatively low by comparisson. So we find that the lighting doesnt match the source. You have a harsh source, and a soft light...makes no sense.

Long story short, I think you should drop the flare...it's not good for this shot.
