Colorized an old photo. How did I do?

Hi all,

This is my first attempt at colorizing a b&w photo. It's an old photo of my mother. I'd like to add it to my portfolio. Would love an honest critique. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Re: Colorized an old photo. How did I do?

Hi GG,

Whilst I am not a retoucher per se, as a photo-artist, I do quite a lot of retouching. However, there will be others on here with much more experience than I.

Having said that, I was very impressed by your retouching of your Mother's sepia, aged photograph. The necklace was especially brill - white can be mega-tricky.

One thing to consider, if you wish to work professionally, is the time it takes to work an image. Presumably this took quite a while? so the best idea would be to grab some tatty old images and work them to gain experience and speed. I imagine love went into this work but are you sufficiently interested to do it to works with which you have no emotional involvement?

Anyway, I really thought this impressive but our more experienced critters may have spotted other things.

Best wishes and well done.

K.

Re: Colorized an old photo. How did I do?

Thanks so much Kapulco, for your thoughtful comments! I really appreciate it! Yes, it did take a long time! I taught myself how from a tutorial. I recently restored around 40 images of a co-worker's. Some were very tattered and old and will most definitely be included in my portfolio. You're so correct, practice is the key and I really enjoy it.

I tend to be very anal and I was wondering if anyone was going to mention the whiteness of her necklace. I actually tried to taint it a little yellow but the colors weren't blending for me. I wonder if the white would be okay.

Again, thank you so much! I am most grateful for your response!

Hi GG, thank you - you're very welcome.

Re: the white necklace - I guess a matter of taste but I liked it very much; it offers contrast and interest from something which might have almost blended in or been garish.

Not bad at all for a first try but faces are not one colour I hope you don't mind i've uploaded your photo on my flickr photostream to show you an example. Skins are different colours of green, blue, purple, red and yellow just tiny bits.
