I might have another job coming in but I have to be able to scan slides. I have an Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner that is about 10 years old. How can I tell, or what do I need to be able to scan slides in?
Thanks

Hello,

I'm about to venture into editing in 16-bit mode. I've been doing some research, gathering facts...and I'd like to ask a few questions to help tie it all together.

So before I got "smart" by shooting in RAW a few years ago, I captured a decent shot of the Chicago skyline -- but in jpg.....booo......i know....

So I would still like to process it regardless of the bit level. I "Open As" a raw file so that I can process in ACR....then complete my work flow thru Photoshop CS5.

I have been getting some banding in the blue sky when adjusting the levels --and I have read that editing in 16 bit mode will help ease that transition between the subtle blue tones.

Will changing the bit mode to 16 be helpful -- even though the original file is 8-bit .jpg? Essentially, the other 8 bits have been thrown away, right? I am thinking that I don’t even have access to all that color information anymore….

And I also have read that some Photoshop tools cannot be used in 160-bit mode? Which ones?

And for my last question: is it beneficial to switch modes when working on individual layers – or even possible? For example, switch to 16-bit mode when adjusting levels, then switch back to 8-bit for another layer. Will the 16-bit level changes remain? Or should I just output to 8-bit prior to printing? I have been sending out prints in .jpg formats….

Sorry for the loaded message. Thanks in advance for any help!!

I've been trying to achieve this look with on camera flash, but i can't seem to get it right, especially the skin tone and the overall vibrant desaturated color.

1) I tried using a gradient mask for skin toning but i can seem to get it right. Is there a good tutorial for this? or does anyone know how to achieve this?

2) The skin looks 3D even though there's hard flash that covers the frame almost evenly.

3) Are the components of the image (i.e. clothes, face, limbs) individually masked and retouched independently?

4) A gaussian blur is applied to give it a slight lo-fi look?

Thanks in advance! :)

I'm pleased to announce a new type of video program from RetouchPRO. It's called "RetouchPRO Concentrate" and each video will have a single presenter concentrating on a single topic. These videos will be shorter than the RetouchPRO LIVE shows, but more densely-packed with information, and also considerably less expensive ($3 for a 3-day rental).

As with RetouchPRO LIVE, the emphasis will be on showing high-end techniques suitable for commercial work. However, these shows will not share RP LIVE's chatty, informal feel and audience participation. RetouchPRO Concentrate will be a concentrated infodump that will have you frequently pausing and rewinding.

Our premier offering is "Andrew Rodney Concentrates on Display Calibration". It is a very deep dive into every aspect of precision calibration for your monitor, a must for professional-level work. It's a 45-minute show that covers the following:

What is display calibration and why you have to calibrate and profile a display

Calibration targets (what to set and why) and why the numbers don't necessarily matter

A look at two display calibration products

Soft proofing and rendering intents

Tips for effective screen to print matching

Depending on response I have plans for many more shows, both from Andrew and from other presenters. Obviously at this price point we need a much higher volume to justify our presenters' time. So if you'd like to see more of RetouchPRO Concentrate, show your support by renting this first show. If you like it, please recommend it to others.
If there is something not too complicated that I can do to make this look terrific I'd love to give it a go. this is the bridal couple's only dance shot. It is just that I'm having doubts where to take it. It has this orangy glow that I like, and this is the shot editors chose. Do I tone the tint down or take it further? I don't think it will ever look natural as the afternoon sun got into the lens, but I, wondering how much of this sun effect shall I leave.

Ok, so I'm new here and want to try my hand at retouching. Where do I start? Loaded question right? I'm trying to take my photography business to the next level and want to learn the art of retouching. I have minimal skills and want to become good enough to maybe make some money at it in my spare time. I'm proficient in CS5. I understand layers, blend modes, cloning, and even know enough about the pen tool to get into trouble. I don't have any real examples of what I'm capable of besides pictures of my own family. I'm trying to break into portraiture. In the mean time I'll be scouring this forum. Thanks, Dave
