1- My apologies if this post is in the wrong area or not conducive to this thread. (Had it in 'software' moving it here) anyway I am a kind of long time member and know that there are gurus here, hoping one of you can help me.

2- My issue: I created a website (for family and close friends) to do minor photo retouching/restoration (this is a hobby for me)

3- Restored a couple photos for a close friend, who then suggested my site to a not-so-close friend of hers

4- Received an email from the not-so-close-friend-of-my-friend to do some work

5- THIS, I THINK, is my mistake:
I created an ftp account at my server (Linux based) and instructed this individual with screen shots on how to install and operate the ftp client
6- Through my Cpanel, have been watching my bandwith... etc., (bandwith's ok) but noticed today (after I cancelled her account because of being told that she needs to find someone local to do her photos) that she had been at my site, every page, through the identity assigned her ftp account and instead of my cpanel indicating her ip address, it displayed the ftp account id. Is this strange? Should I be concerned? If so, of what should I be concerned?

7- I just want to do this as a hobby for family and close friends, but I still want to be secure.

I'm looking into a php script/form instead of creating an ftp account for family and friends. Is this a safer option?

I'm curious and perhaps my lack of knowledge is dangerous, kind of like, "..just enough rope to hang myself..".

Help, suggestions, tremendously appreciated.

Thanks!

I have previously posted a problem when scanning slides on my Nikon Super CoolScan 5000.

As seen below

http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/input-output-workflow/22510-nikon-super-coolscan-5000-white-haze.html#post199381

Basically, all the light\bright spots seem to wash out, or flare out.

Either its dirt, residue on the slides or there is a problem with the scanner, or the scanners rare really like that, but it doesn't appear on a flatbed.

I will try to clean the slides first, and scan them. If that doesn't work, I'm going to send them out to a slide scanning service that uses the exact same scanner I have and pay them to do it. If they get better post cleaning results that I have, then I will know that there is something wrong with this brand-new scanner.

I have purchased isopropyl\isopropanol-2 alcohol 99% (surgical grade rubbing alcohol)

I have also purchased a small amount of PEC-12 with the PEC-12 pads.

I'm also looking into FilmRenew or Vitafilm.

I'm not sure if its required, but after cleaning you probably have to seal the film with a lubricant, such as Pentaerythritol tetastearate dissolved in isopropyl\isopropanol-2 alcohol 99% (surgical grade rubbing alcohol)......a .6 grams per liter solution....

Any advice ?
How do you clean the film exactly. Do you rub it under the solution. Do you leave it overnight. Is there a specific amount of time to leave it under. A youtube video would be great. Will the solution remove the actual image if kept under too long? What about drying ? How should I dry it and where?
Using a blowdryer with or without heat ?....in a bathroom....etc....

Hi guys!

My name is Tom, and I'm interested in photo retouch and anything to do with graphics in general. I currently employ Photoshop CS3.

A little about me, I'm a forum administrator and moderator, systems administrator, used to use vB, now I own IPB. I work in real estate and finance, I'm a watch collector; call me a WIS if you wish :p, I also do free lance graphics work.

My favorite category of food is seafood and pasta. As far as meats go, I love me a good steak. I listen to any type of music, minus hip-hop, rap, country, or bluegrass. I do like beer, and try beers from many countries when I can. My hobbies include writing, collecting movies and watches, spending time with my lovely wife, horsing around with my nephews (no kids of my own), oh, before I forget, I'm 34! :p

At this age, I count back 1 year each birthday I have!

Hi Guys,

I was passed on this photo of this Great grandmother to repair, I am afraid the photo is very damaged, it has been in a frame for years, it is actually a copy of a copy, the original has been lost. I am trying to repair what I can, but would be most grateful if I could have the help and knowledge of how to repair this treasured damaged photo from you guys.

The photo is of my son paternal great grandmother, the lady was somewhat a character in life. It would be lovely to see her photo in great shape and to preserve my son's family history.

Many thanks in advance.

regards

I am trying to repair what I can, but would be most grateful if I could have the help and knowledge of how to repair this treasured damaged photo from you guys.

The photo is of my son paternal great grandmother, the lady was somewhat a character in life. It would be lovely to see her photo in great shape and to preserve my son's family history.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Initial post and firstly, I just want to say some of you guys are amazing! I am in absolute awe by what some of you can achieve - I only hope that one day I can do half of what you can do!

Right - the issue - attached are 2 old photos (nan and grandad), photos are 30 years old and have been sitting in oval frames in a sunny window since the wedding day. I noticed how they had faded and said "i'll try and fix them a bit" - little did I know the actual complexity of the task.

So - how would you go about it? I did notice (I think) almost all of the damage to the standing photo is in the blue channel. Not sure if this helps.

The sitting one - well, what can I say - bleached - completely.

Just wondering how you guys would approach something like this using CS3/Elements/Corel? Any ideas, suggestions or examples would be greatly appreciated.

I have been playing with color balances and the clone tool and color brush but 1) has taken ages and 2) doesn't look great.

I have some hi-res (600dpi) scans that I can make available if it helps? Just let me know.

Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!!

Hello everyone,
You guys are amazing, I am so impressed with your talent. (this is my first post as well)
I have just finished my first restoration job ever, and am having a really hard time getting the green tinge off the faces. Am working in photoshop.
They were pretty burned out, with a harsh white light, and it was a real challenge to get the faces to look right. (I think I did a reasonable job for a first timer, but when I printed it out, the color is not right)
If anyone point me in the right direction as to how to adjust the color so that they look rosy and human, I would be eternally grateful.
Am going to attempt to post the original and my version and would be happy to get feedback. ouch!
Thanks so much,
Jozie

Was wondering if there is anything that can be done to lighten the subject in this picture. When I try the noise level goes up. I have used curves. Brightness and contrast adjustment layers. Noise reduction. Color correction and a levels adjustment. Even tried painting. Here is link to the original image.
