Hardware - - WinXP and PS6

Hi
Want to get a new computer and I'm wondering if anyone has one with Win XP and if so are there any incompatibility issues with PS6. I did a search on the Adobe forum but to tell you the truth I really couldn't figure out from the threads if there were real issues or not. Also went into the microsoft and a few other sites but didn't find anything. Anyone here able to steer me in the right direction?

I've been running XP for a couple of months now and absolutely no problems, not one GPF since I installed it. Its based on a 1.4 Athlon chip and PS6.1 flies. I've discussed XP with Tom on another thread and I've attempted to crash it using a couple of combinations that were guaranteed to crash 98SE but it keeps going without complaint.

I have not heard of any incompatabilities. Every comment I've heard is very positive. In fact the general opinion seems to be that with a fast processor and as much RAM as you can afford, PS runs like a Swiss watch...much better than under W98. Tom

It does seem to work better with XP than other Windows versions but that doesn't mean you can't lock it up. I have managed to do that a few times.

I'm still running 5.0 with Windows XP. No problems whatsoever, except that I found out 256 megs of ram doesn't satisfy me any longer. Another 256 will be coming before long.

I've been running XP for a few months now along with PS 6.1 with no issues (once I figured out another problem). If you have a broadband connection and use Black Ice Defender as a firewall, you will have problems with the BSOD unless you get over to their website and download the newest XP patch. That problem had me baffled for the longest time and I thought it may have been PS related. Since the patch was applied I have not had a single crash.

512 megs of RAM

Screams right along without a hitch!

Out of curiosity, how much ram do you have devoted to Photoshop, and typically how large are your files?

Ed,

I've got 70% allocated but I know people run up to 80% but they aren't multitasking etc. I think PS6 would just slow down rather than fall over if it couldnt grab enough memory.

Went out looking around today and came across a new HP which seems to have alot going for it. I have a HP now and although I have no technical problems with it, I wasn't happy with their support initially when I needed some answers and for that reason wasn't sure if I wanted to go that route again.I had planned on going the "Dell Route" this time but here 're the specs on the Hp.
It's the Pavillion750N,P4,1.6 G,512 DDR SDRAM expandable to 2G, 16X CDRW&DVD ,32MB Graphic. The best price I found was at Staples for 999.98 which included a $200 rebate on a HP monitor and a free year of MSN. I plan to start doing some video edit this year on the computer and want to make certain that I have enough of memory and speed.

Any comments please?

Thanks Chris. You're right. I recently had a large file, and it s--l--o--w--e--d down. That's for sure. No crashes.
