Hardware - - I need help getting started.

Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. My niece asked me if I could fix some photograghs for her. She said they had big yellow spots on them. Being a softie and thinking she had maybe a dozen, I said yes. Well she turned up with a hundred. Lots with what looks like acid burns and the rest are either faded or have bad colour casts. I use Photoshop 5.5 but have never tackled anything as bad as this before.

I have a Canon Snapscan 310 in the garage. It has a scsi interface and scans at 300x600. Its about 10 years old. I also have a HP mutifunction device with a scanner. It scans okay I guess. Are these adeqate or will my task be easier with a new scanner. I guess they are a lot better now.
Any suggestions as to which way I shoud go?

I have a Viewsonic 19" crt which I am real happy with. The only problem is desk real estate. I have read a lot of negative comment about using LCD monitors for grahics work. Something about lousy colours and not being able to display true black.
Are LCD monitors okay for photo restoration work?

Is this something you wish to do long term or are you just helping your niece with 100 pics? Long term you need to invest your time learning, investing in good equipment, and practicing. If you just want to fix the 100 pics, you should pay someone with experience...you'd save money, time and in the end get a good finished product.

I also have thousands of family photograghs in a large cedar chest that I would like to store as digital images. That will take me years, so I guess its long term.
You never made mention of the equipment I have so I guess it pretty crappy.
I'll take your advice and purchase something better. What should I look for in a scanner? There is so much to choose from. I have already decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS.
