Scanning 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 Pos and Negitatives

I have a project to scan 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 both positive and Negitatives. My scanner can do 35 mm slides fine. The 35 mm has an addapter for the slide. The 2 1/4' do not and just laying them on the scanning surface does not yield good results. Does anybody have any ideas on this?

Thanks

Dave Bliss

To do a quality job, you should really use a dedicated film / negative scanner. Unfortunately the ones that handle 2 1/4 media are usually at the top models of a line like the Nikon Coolscan series or Minolta Dimage. There are neg / slide adapters that for flat bed scanners but my experience has been that these scanners lack the dynamic range and do not do anywhere near as good a job as dedicated film/neg scanners.
I guess a lot depends on what you intent is. If you are trying to preserve memories which are on the 2 1/4 media (because the film will degrade over time especially if they are color), and you do not want to invest $800 in a scanner, then a high end flat bed with adapter (Epson makes good ones) will be better than nothing.
Finally there are service companies who will scan for you but the service is expensive particularly if you want high resolution files.

mistermonday:
Thanks for your response. I went to Epsons web site and saw a scanner V750-M Pro which lists for $800.00. Are you familiar with this scanner and, is so, would this solve my problem?

Thanks

Dave, you the link below shows a good evaluation of the V750 and compares it against the Nikon LS9000 which is considered the Rolls Royce of dedicated film scanners.
The bottom line is that the Epson seems to produce very good results. While it is not quite as good a s the Nikon, it may not be possibel for you to notice any difference after all of the PS editing you will likely do. And of course the price of the Epson is a small fraction of the Nikon. It appears to be very good value for your money and at the same time you have a really high end flat bed scanner for photos and documents.
