Laptop vs. Notebook?

Soon I will buy one of the above. Could anyone please explain the difference between laptop and notebook?

I need portability, with a PC operating system (please, no Mac recommendations-I have my reasons)

My goal is to shoot images in the field, download to said computer, and do color adjustments at home with a color corrected monitor.

Any recommendations for brand or product? I would like to keep this below $1500, if possible.

I'm too far into Microsoft to switch now. Although if Vista doesn't improve...
Anyway, I've decided to upgrade an old laptop, and see what kind of mileage I can get out of the old case for now.
