Question Number of activations?

I recall using some software utility that, among other things, reported on how often the camera had been activated, if that's the right term. In other words, photos taken or shutter opened. I can't recall what it was. Anybody know of such a thing?

Thanks,

Will

Re: Number of activations?

It's actually stored in the EXIF data saved with every image you take. If you download a program like irfanView, (it's free) it will tell you.

Take a picture, open it in irfanView and select the image information icon (an i with a circle around it.)

Click on the "EXIF info" button on the window that opens and scroll down to the "Total pictures" line.

There are other utilities out there that you can use as well, that just happens to be the one I use.

Hope this helped.

Re: Number of activations?

EBJ,

I use IrfanView all the time (it's great). That must have been where I saw it.

Thanks,

Will

Re: Number of activations?

I just got a D90, and, as silly as this may sound, I can't tell if the VR in the kit lens is working. I guess I could jump up and down and take a shot . . . . I've heard people say the VR is "not too loud" in some lenses, but it's silent in mine.

Is this feature reported anywhere in the EXIF data?

Thanks,

Will

Re: Number of activations?

Answering my own question, the info about each shot on the camera says whether the VR was on or not. It's very quiet, and quite effective.

I couldn't find the total number of shots when I used Infranview on a raw file that had been converted to DNG, but when I tried it on a NEF file it was in the EXIF data. Here's a sample from my D80. It's the next-to-last item:

Smile Re: Number of activations?

I found the utility I was asking about. It's called PreviewExtractor (http:\\drchung.new21.net/previewextractor). It has a command called "Shutter Count."

It works on NEF files but not on jpgs or DNGs.
