Wacom Intuos 3 A5 or A5 wide

Hey guys,

since 2002 I use Photoshop and my mouse for retouching. I thought about buyin on of these Wacom Intuos tablets. I use a 17 inch flatscreen of my laptop and a about 17 inch flatscreen with my PC.

A tried the A6 tablet many times but for my taste itīs a bit too small. I think about buying an A5 or an A5 wide...which is the best choice in terms of handling and precision? How much is an A5 wide tablet different from the "normal" format? Advantages/ disadvantages?

I searched the forum but i couldnīt find a fitting answer.

Thx for answering!

Phil

In fact i suck in photoshop, so i was thinking to buy one of those tablets to help me better, so i am watching this thread to see which one you or others will recommend, but i really would ask which is the best to get if so, i also have 17" of my laptop LCD and 17" of my CRT [i am planning to buy larger monitor later].

Hi Philipp,
I would recommend to check the pixelsize of your monitor.
My monitor is 1600x1200px which fits perfect to the 200x152mm active area on the A5.

If your 17" is a wide format, maybe the A5 wide fits better - the active area there is 271 x159mm.
Just check Image ratio (hight x width)

If you think about using an additional second monitor in the future:
go for the wide!

Michael

Thx girlsfather!

I found out that my "wide" discription from the manual isnīt THAT wide. I got an 1140 x 900px- screen.

So a 200x152mm would fit better than a 271x159mm, right?

did you mean 1440 x 900?

The Image-Ratio is important if the Wacom is used the way that the active area is kind of mirrored to the monitor (top right corner wacom is top right corner monitor).

Ok, finally^^ i figured out that I need to get the "A5 wide" to have nearly the same active space on the desk like my screen.

I used to be soooo good in math! *gg*

Thx girlsfather!

I am thinking to go with larger additional monitor in the future.

Re: Wacom Intuos 3 A5 or A5 wide

Itīs all about the ratio/proportion[????] (my english sucks) of the sides of your screen in comparison to the tablet. Your screen seems to be some kind of 16:10...

So any "wide" tablet (a6,a5 etc...) should be fine.
And now i depend on what you want to do with the wacom.
An "a6" is very comfortable for the hand īcause you can put it on the bottom and with one stroke you can reach all over your screen. For drawings itīs too small. I just tried the a5 and the a3. The last one was too big in my view.

It also depends on your work you wanna do with the Wacom (and the money) AND if you need to work just in your room or to be portable/flexiable [???], which model you should choose...bamboo, intuos or the fancy over 1000 $ cintiq (dunno the right name)

Hope that helps...

It is only for editing photos, but who knows if i am gonna drawing as well [i am a civil engineer and i may try to draw something with CAD programs in the future].
And for now i am using only one monitor with my Mac laptop, but i am sure i will buy additional monitor to work with it later.
