What do you think of Imacs GLOSS screen???

I've recently bought a 24 inch Imac.

Before that I was working on a view sonic matt screen and i don't know if its just me, but whens the suns coming into the room its almost like looking into a mirror and trying to retouch can be difficult.

What do you guys and gals think of the Gloss screen compared to the old matt screens apple had?

Not sure, maybe there is something i can attach to the screen to take away the reflection?

I donīt think u should be retouching with light from the back anyway... or too much light on the room

The gloss screen can be a problem sometimes :/.

But isnīt she pretty???

I agree the gloss screens are a problem. Had to use an imac lact year in a job, and the strip lights meant I was continually having to turn it round so it lost the reflections. "isnīt she pretty?" - hope THAT'S not the reason they made the decision.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for that option in the next refresh.

I just ordered an imac on the weekend. So is there no cover we can put on to stop this happening?

Apple, making a bad decision on hardware based on looks? SURELY not.

That's like saying that sometimes PC's can be cheaper because you're not paying for the design of the apple. Crazy.

Re: What do you think of Imacs GLOSS screen???

I'm not a Mac user, so don't fault me for 2nd-hand info, but Uwe pointed out in his RP LIVE show that the glossy screen can be easily lifted off with suction cups like those used to attach notepads to car windshields. Of course, this would leave the screen more vulnerable.

A random Google search result

And surely void the warranty in the process. I think just make sure you position yourself well in terms of your lightsource.

Yep to me most of Apples design decisions (early imacs excepted I will grant you) seem to be based on form follows function principle. Assuming that looks can't exist without a compromise to function, is obviously incorrect. Macs are also made of recyclable materials, and …theres just too much to say really, I'm almost falling over myself.

PC's on the other hand, seem to be designed by men, with little imagination unable to think out of a very small box. The best it ever gets is when they are blatantly copying Apple.

Got my imac today but I think im going to send it back and go for a smaller one. At the time 24inch seemed a good idea but not any more.

Keep the 24-inch. Yes, it's huge, but the display on the 20-inch is inferior.

How is it inferior apart from the size? I kept the 24inch one anyway but am curious. Absolutley loving it though.

Re: What do you think of Imacs GLOSS screen???

The 20-inch iMac has a TN LCD in it; the 24-inch uses an IPS LCD. You're far better off with the 24-inch display. You'd notice colour shifts across the screen with a TN screen. Shifts are minimal, in theory anyway, with an IPS screen.

Check out the information here, summed up in the Purchasing Considerations section:http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1039222

The sticky was posted in 2006 but the notes on TN and IPS panels are still relevant to the iMac comparison.

Also see http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/panelsearch.htm

The 24-inch iMac is a sweet system. Make the most of it!
