Cool Epson R300 Cuts Off Photos

I tried searching for this issue, but I may not be searching the correct terms...

I bought an Epson R300 photo printer back in '05 and it's been working great ever since. However, I have to be very careful how I take my pictures...and here's why:

If I take a portait shot of a person and do not center it (leaving the top of their head close to the top of the frame) when I go to print it out, the printer cuts off the top of their head? It's very annoying to say the least. I've tried adjusting my margins, but every borderless 4x6 photo I print, there's always some part of the actual photo that gets cut off whether it be on the top, bottom or sides.

I've been told that all borderless prints always have some cropping, but this issue seems exaggerated. When I take my digital photos to a film developing store, every photo prints out exact (no noticable cropping).

Are personal use printers, such as my Epson R300, just not as "sophisticated" as the retail store printers or is there an underlying issue with my Epson?

Thoughts??

You don't just happen to have the scale set to above 100%?

Rock,
It's hard to say without knowing which application you're using to print from, i.e. Photoshop CSx. In general, consumer printers are sophisticated enough not to have an issue with sizing/cropping. It would be a setting either in the printer dialog, printer preferences, or application, which is affecting your printing at home. It would not affect your printing elsewhere, as those printers have standard ways of handling cropping. The fact that your external prints look fine would lead us to believe it's a problem as noted above.

Also, be sure your printer driver is up to date.

Re: Epson R300 Cuts Off Photos

hi,
one thing i would suggest first is resize your picture...

most digital camers the image aspect ratio is 4:3 however that 4"x6" is appx 1:1/5 ratio (this difference in aspect ration the problem your having) ...... so suggest in PS to crop your image to that 1:1.5 ratio....
note: if you have cs4 you might want to use content aware feature, you can resize ratio without doing a normal cropping...

in this way your not relying on the printer software to the image size which in your case it doing alousy job of cropping if it doing any at all ...

don't know that much about epson printers.... the software your using if it has print with preview... use that... the only thing is that you can make everyting fit however.... it will probably be distorted unless you have change the aspect ration of your image...

well those are my thoughts i hope thier useful...

Have you tried adjusting the borderless expansion in your printer settings? I sometimes overlook this myself and it defaults to max setting.
