Off-line storage: Carbonite and other experiences

NEW THREAD BASED ON:

Onlne backup services, like Carbonite, due to hard doisk failure or accidental deletion - Danny

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPEROENCES WITH CARBONITE (OR ANY OTHER INTERNET-BASED SEVICE PROVIDER?

============================================

Danny -- Whew!!!! Been there, done that - including using Recover My Files - although I didn't have the vast quantity that you have. I DO know that feeling that goes even further than the pit of your stomach when you see all those files missing and don't know if you will EVER see them again...

I am currently signed up with Carbonite's backup service as well as having several backup drives at the house -- but we all know that hard drives fail and sometimes a new one even fails (happened to me more than once), so I finally decided to use an online service as that extra layer of security (if someone breaks into my home and steals the computer and drives, or they're caught in a fire -- things I don't expect to happen, but events that having an extra copy at the house doesn't protect me against.

Re: Hard Disk file recovery - I dodged a bullet

Looks like you can get Carbonite's 3 year backup service for about the price of a large hard disk. With the off-site security feature it might be a good option.

Re: Off-line storage: Carbonite and other experien

Carbonite (or similar service) makes sense for relatively low data growth rate needs. Probably not practical for folks shooting 20-30 GB/week

Definitely a plus to prevent loss from fire, flood, electrical disaster.

Glad you came out OK too, CJ.

Been awhile since I looked at Carbonite; thx, John, for the 3yr plan tidbit.

Re: Off-line storage: Carbonite and other experien

Thanks, Danny - I'm glad you came out okay also.

A downside for online backups is the length of time (days, not hours) to backup just the documents directories. I have broadband, but it still took a week to backup a bit over 50 gig. Once the initial backup is done (finally), the daily backup of any changes/additions doesn't take long.

Re: Off-line storage: Carbonite and other experien

Discovered as of September 2009 that Carbonite does noot support external hard drives, but Mozy does.

Good info here: http://www.goodwebpractices.com/othe...carbonite.html
