Samsung S27A850T vs...

Hi,

Im trying to find a 27" to accompany my old Samsung 24".

But I do have to agree that there are so many monitors out there, and as a photographer and retoucher, Im afraid each time I have to make a new buying decision!

I can say that my old Samsung 24" (2443BW) isnt great!, but do work good enough when calibrated with Spyder3 pro. It has great colour accuracy (once calibrated), but still is a TN panel, and has its drawbacks.

So, I have concluded that Im going to buy a 27", and the two options available in my country and pocket, and after some reviews reading... are the Samsung S27A850T, that is supposed to be great for photo-editing, and its contestant the Apple Cinema Display 27" (or thunderbolt.. if I upgrade more hardware).

The samsung is cheaper!.. I could almost buy 2 for the price of the cinema/t.bolt so.. what do you think?

I hope this hasnt been discussed before, cause I didnt find any thread about it... (may I have spelled wrong while searching? :S)

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are looking for alternatives, are Dells or NECs available to you? Dell has some monitors that offer a decent bang for the buck. Check the NEC site for your country. They had some nice closeout pricing on a few models when I visited not too long ago and the closeout prices brought them down into the more reasonable range.

Hi xvvvz,

Thanks for your reply, and... yes both Dell & Nec are available but this is what I found:

There´s no 27" Nec with 2560x1440 besides the PA271W-BK at almost 3x the price of the Samsung S27A850T.

There is a (cheaper than the samsung) 27" but with only 1920x1080, so Im not interested in that one.

Then for Dell, theres two.. one at the same price of what the S27A850T, the famous U2711 that so many praise but aswell hate because of the AG beeing horrible, and lots of people are changing for cheapos just to avoid this antiglare issue. And the U2713HM that should be an upgraded U2711, but there must be a catch!.. cause its even cheaper than the U2711! and I have never heard of an upgrade, being cheaper than the predecessor, so I guess there must be something hiding there.

The Samsung S27A850T seems to be the sweet deal, cause its an upgraded s27a850d that has so many great reviews despite of the backlighting issue, but this "they say" is fixed on the T model.

I did put an order for the Samsung, and will wait somedays until they are in stock, and then shipped to me.. if I just dont like it, I guess I will be trading it in + paying some more, for the ACD.

If there are other alternatives at a price between (or cheaper than) the Samsung and the Apple one, please let me know. 2560x1440, 27" and with great colour representation (I have the Spyder3 Pro calibrator, forgot to say). And I wont go for the koreans at this point, cause I need a reliable service behind in case something gets wrong someday, as it is going to be used professionally and not for pleasure... well its a pleasure to work though

If I was a Poker player "only" I would buy 4-6 27" koreans, and build a megawall.

Re: Samsung S27A850T vs...

Checking prices of the NEC I mentioned in B&H is funny to see that its only $1371 while they dont have the samsung S27A850T but the D instead at rebate, 25% off for $749. So its kind of half price the one with the other. But I guess the T would be at $999 or $1049, so its pretty close to the NEC!

If I buyed from B&H + shipping + norwegian taxes, it would cost me = a tad over $2000 US. I would save over $300 importing it, but then having issues with power (110 vs 220v) and warranty.

In Norway the S27A850T i got it for 4995 nok. thats = $867 US. Not that bad of price beeing in Norway, where almost everything is 2x or 3x the price of the US. (but I can´t find this model over there yet).

In UK, the samsung is £544-569 (5075-5305 nok) and the Dell U2713HM is £490-550 (4570-5130 nok.), the Dell in Norway is: 4490 nok.

All this prices are checked online 24 sept. 2012.

Its better to go for samsung S27A850T . Would the extra price of apple display pay you back if you spend that much for it ? And Well there are other monitors too.
