HP 4c Scanner/Adaptec SCSI - 64-bit Win7 driver ?

I am converting from WinXP to a Windows 7 64-bit system, but cannot locate a suitable 64-bit driver for the SCSI controller/HP scanner.

Adaptec offers a 32-bit Windows 7 version for the SCSI 2906 card [+], but it cannot be installed ("Windows was unable to install your SCSI Controller", also the Windows 7 troubleshooter cannot locate a driver)

Any suggestions for a suitable 64-bit driver would be much appreciated.

Dave.

[+] Filename: aic78xx_aic78u2_win7_2k8r2_x86_v605457.exe
Date: 17 Mar 2010, Size: 147.0 KB, Version: 6.0.5457

32-bit Driver file for AIC-78xx and AIC-78U2 based SCSI cards and HBAs for Microsoft 7 x86 and Server 2008R2 x86.

Note: This driver will function under the 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and Server 2008R2 only. There will be no support for x64 Editions of 7 or Server 2008R2.

No idea about the driver from Adaptec but have you thought of trying Vuescan which is said to support this scanner (Win7 64 bit) and if you do not have a driver loaded it will load a suitable one for you?

If you have no luck in locating a driver I think it worthwhile downloading the demo of Vuescan to see how it works

Re: HP 4c Scanner/Adaptec SCSI - 64-bit Win7 drive

Tony - Many thanks, I was hoping that VueScan would help.

There's an 'Install ASPI' step in the 'Missing Scanner' dialog, but exploration of this seems to lead back to Adaptec.

I'm wondering whether another SCSI card which has a 64-bit driver might be a solution ?

Dave.

Re: HP 4c Scanner/Adaptec SCSI - 64-bit Win7 drive

I am pretty sure that you will find SCSI cards that have 64 bit drivers including those manufactured by Adaptec.

But I think you will find that the cost may make the whole deal not worthwhile. I suspect that you may find that you can buy a new scanner such as the entry level Epson v600 at a similar cost (under $200) to a new SCSI card and the new scanner will have a better optical resolution (and more bells and whistles!) than the older HP.

So unless there is a particular reason to stay with the HP perhaps an upgrade makes more sense?

Re: HP 4c Scanner/Adaptec SCSI - 64-bit Win7 drive

Tony/Gewuerz - many thanks.

I'm presently pursuing a tip recommended elsewhere [+], which suggests that the Adaptec SCSI 19160 will work. A card has been traced via ebay, so I'll post again once I've tried it.

Dave.

[+] I found this thread looking for 64-bit drivers for a hp jetscan 4c. As i read one of the posters mentioned that the 4c is sometimes recognized as a hp 6100. So with that in mind I tried the following:

I installed an adaptec scsi card 19160 and installed the 'Ultra160 64-bit Driver v7.5.645.100 for Windows 7 & 2008R2' I also installed 'VueScan Pro 9.2.02' software which recognized my jetscan 4c as a 6100. The scanner now works on my Win7 64-bit system.

Re: HP 4c Scanner/Adaptec SCSI - 64-bit Win7 drive

The workround seems OK. My system - with VueScan recognising the HP 4c as HP 6100 - now comprises:

* Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
* HP ScanJet 4C
* Adaptec SCSI Card 19160 (PCI)
* SCSI Cable HD 50 Pin Male to 50 Pin Male Centronics 1.8m (to match the 50-pin female connector on the SCSI card)
* Adaptec Ultra 160 64-bit Driver v7.5.645.100 for Windows 7 (via u160_w7_ws08r2_x64_drv_b7_5_645_100.exe)
* VueScan Professional 9.2.08

N.B. The PC motherboard needs to take PCI cards (my Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H LGA1155 ATX has 2 off PCI slots)

The 'new' components cost: 1) Second-hand Adaptec card £35; 2) Second-hand SCSI cable £18.24; 3) VueScan Professional $75

Dave.
