HDR with people

I have been seeing people do awesome work with people and I think it has a hdr look too it. I will post some examples. How are the getting this look with people can anyone do it and explain how it is done or point me to a tutorial.
If it is not hdr can you tell me what it is called so I can research it more. I have got to be able to get this look. I love it.

I have tried doing hdr with models where lights are used in a studio and have edited them in a raw editor to make 3 different images with 2 stops between each and it has not worked for me so far.
