Hey Tommy, I'll take a run at this. The answer to your question is basically, yes.
However only as a byproduct of the bit depth of High Dynamic Range images. The colors are increased along with the luminance values.
8 bit offers over 16,000,000 possible colors
16 bit offers 281,000,000,000,000 possible colors
32 bit, well that'd be 27 zeros

So I think probably you have the ability to push colors quite a bit further before they begin to separate and finally posterize, just because the hues live much closer togather.
