Train station with young lady.

Taken in country Australia of a friend at an abandoned railway station.
My first attempt at introducing a human subject into a HDR shot.

This is excellent. I hope it is a big image because you could frame and sell it with ease!

Re: Train station with young lady.

How was it done..

A number of photos.

Actually taken at midday. 1st two shots didnt have the model & suitcase.
Just the train station taken at metered and -2 stops.
3rd image was taken at metered this time with model and suitcase.

In post-processing (photomatix), the first 2 images created the HDR scene.
In photoshop, the HDR image and the 3rd image were opened as layers with 3rd image (with model) at top of the stack.
A mask was applied to the 3rd image and filled with black to hide-all. Then with white brush I painted the model and suitcase into place.
I now had a HDR photo with a normal model. Image was flattened.
Image was duplicated with the duplicate turned off.
On the BG image I now added a curves adjustment layer and crushed the blacks down to give a night-time scene.
The dup image was turned back on and a mask added and filled with black.
With a white brush (lowered opacity), I now painted the original midday lighting back in to look like she was lit from a flash or street-lamp...
Once done, all that was left to do was add a light to look like an oncoming train. This was done with Knoll Light Factory.

Happy to answer any questions if the above is confusing.

Steve.

Very Nice..!!
I agree with Mannock.. I am sure it is a very "sellable" piece of art..

Thanks for sharing the 'how' it was done ..

Re: Train station with young lady.

I do like this image - congrtulations Steve on a well conceived and executed concept. I do have just one small niggle - for me it appears that there is another light source behind and to camera right of the model but it's not apparent in the image. I think if you just toned down the model's left arm and the left side of her dress (the side away from the train light source) a little you'd have just about perfect an illusion.

BTW, have you ever tried shooting day-for-night using the old film technique of deep blue filter and underexposure? Means you have to do less in PhotoShop afterwards and for me, that's always a Good Thing!

Congrats again, mate. Great work

Steve - the image is not appearing. I am receiving the message "URL not found on this server". Can this be rectified?

Cheers
