Resolution for Print

Hi, Does anybody have any comments on image resolution for printing to an Epson R200 inkjet which is A4 max size.
I dont want to work with unnecessarily large files as this uses ups memory etc. but I dont want to compromise image quality. I mainly Scan slides so can control the scan resolution as well as within Elements.
Any advise will be welcome.
