Hidden Power Support - - Can't install HPE2 tools from CD.

Hi,

For the life of me, I cannot get the tools to install from the HPPE2 CD. I'm running Mac OS X.3 Panther. Whether I use the Flash interface or directly launch the HPforPE2 icon, I get as far as the Install window (the one that appears after the password window) and click on the Install button. And then, I get the spinning busy cursor, and nothing else ever happens. The installer becomes unresponsive and I have to force quit from the Dock.

Any ideas?

Do a search (using Mac's search) for Adobe Photoshop Elements 2. If you can't find that, you are probably experiencing a change in name for the program folder. There may be other 10.3 issues, but I would imagine this is something that might be easy to fix. If you can't find that folder, create one on the desktop and try the install again. If you can install to the desktop folder, throw it out, re-name the program folder, and try the install again.

Thanks a lot for the speedy reply. The Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 folder is right there in my Applications folder, so that's not the problem. But I also have Adobe Photoshop 5 LE in my OS 9 Applications folder... might that be causing the problem?

Also, is the Installer a "Classic" app? The icon in the Dock has that pixellated, "Classic icon" look...

Anyway, what next?

How long are you waiting before terminating
the install?

Do you have virus protection disabled?

Are you logging on with a screen name that can install programs?

The 'application' is a hybred, however it was also created before OSX was available. Works on OS X, I am sure. I have it installed on 10.2.8...

FWIW I just double checked the installer. I'm running OS10.3.2 - it definitely works - and it's quick - no waiting about. I tried it using a dummy Elements folder to avoid overwriting my rather complex set of folders in the Elements presets (I originally installed in 10.1.5 and then copied my preset files across from the back up after I upgraded) and it worked fine, both from the flash utility and just choosing the installer.
It might be worth trying creating that dummy folder as it forces a manual choice in the installer and you can then choose exactly which folder you want to install.

Susan, thanks for the backup on that...very helpful. You are right about the second folder, and that is partly the point -- you should get a choice when there are two named the same thing. if you don't have a choice, then there is something amis with the Elements folder. It is also a way for me to ask if elements is even installed...there have been a few cases where those asking for help have either not had the program installed or thought Hidden Power was stand-alone. I like to be sure the basics are covered.

Appreciate your time, as always. BTW -- you should forward your mailing address (email it to me). I have a new book out and you are one of the few people mentioned in the credits...which I think entitles you to a copy.

I waited about 30 minutes the last time around -- no joy

I do have Virex installed, but it's set up to only run and scan manually.

As for password, yes, I'm the only user (and thus the Administrator) for this machine.

So, the installer is a "Carbon" app, then?

Any other ideas? In the meantime, I'm going to post a query to the Elements group on Usenet and see if anybody else has encountered this.

Just tried that; unfortunately, same result. After clicking on the final Install button, HPE2 gives me a busy cursor, but nothing happens after that. Clicking and holding on its Dock icon shows an Application Not Responding menu item. But if I launch Activity Monitor, it shows HPE2 still running, and gobbling up over 60% of my CPU activity!

Can you verify that anybody's installed this successfully under 10.3.x Panther?

Please read Susan's entry above. She is on 10.3. I am installing 10.3 on a peripheral workstation next weekend, so will be able to do some testing after that. Have you tried ALL of the troubleshooting stuff listed on the website in the Installation Instructions (instructions: scroll to the bottom for the tool installation link)? Sounds like you are having some sort of extension conflict or something. I have never done it on OS X, but you may want to try rebuilding the OS9 desktop if you have that OS installed -- I am not clear on whether the application is attempting to find something and can't...though it should obviously find the file on the desktop.

Are you having any other troubles with your computer? I know you said you don't have virus protection, but you might try entirely disabling that to be sure it isn't running in the background...this really sounds like the problem to me: these are exactly the symptoms that might occur with some 'protection'.

it is not likely that the installer is bad or will entirely fail. Does OS X start with extensions off? Another thing I've not had to try.

One solution may be to fix damaged permissions. This is from the Apple Help:

You can only verify or repair disk permissions on the startup disk.

Okay, I solved this one! Panther offers an option to maintain a copy of your .Mac iDisk on your desktop, which is then automatically kept synchronized with your actual iDisk on Apple's servers, in the background. I suspect that the installer was confused by the presence of the iDisk. I had something like this happen not long ago when installing another program -- the installer, which also searched for certain files before installing, took around 20 minutes to search the iDisk, and seemed to actually be searching over the Internet! In the case of HPE2, there was no evidence that this was going on (no activity lights on my cable modem blinking) but somehow, the Installer was still bolluxed up by the presence of the local iDisk copy.

Anyway, now you know what to ask the next person with this problem: "Do you keep a local copy of your iDisk on your desktop?"

Glad that was solved. SEE: had you just waited it out, the installer would have installed after searching the iDisk (and whatever expanse of the internet). Also, the "disconnect all peripherals" suggestion in the installation instructions should have worked as well, as that would cut off internet access.

Susan, while CDs can be faulty (very very rare from my experience), the application would probably not even kick off in that case -- if it was available. But, again, thanks as always for your suggestions and your 10.3 expertise!
