| | | Help Date this Photo, Please. Hi.
My customer asked me to restore this picture, which I have done, But she also asked if I could date it for her.
When I mentioned that my friends at Retouch Pro may be able to help she gave me permission to post it.
She thinks it may be her grandmother but is not sure.
The original picture is mounted onto card. There is no photographer info to help date it.
Can anyone date this from the clothes? I can post close-up pictures if required.
Thanks.
Ken.

Not knowing a thing about your clients age, and therefore unable to guess how old her great grandmother is, I would guess this picture was taken between 1914 and 1920. Prior to those dates, hemlines were still to the floor. After that the flapper look was popularized and fashions were created to make women look long and lean (no high waists).
Here's a link to an image that looks close to what the women were wearing and why I picked that date range... http://www.marquise.de/en/1900/pics/1910/1916_4.shtml
If you want to look at the fashions going all the way back to medieval times you might want to check out this website... http://www.marquise.de/en/1900/pics/1910/1910c.shtml |

Thanks for the links.. My customer is 'middle aged' if that helps.
Also there was a typo in my first post. I typed Great Grandmother when I meant Grandmother so that fits in far better with your dates.
I have amended the first post.

I would agree the datestamp for me might be a little higher 1920-25,
Flappers were just coming post ww1.
But these look a bit like my Aunty F b1901,she was a Nanny, similar clothes to these.and these look as if in service, rather than scullery maids.
Not knowing which is which,
the lady on right has no wedding that I can see.
Maybe if the owner of the picture gets her G.mother Death cert.age will be on this..subtract to get Birth date..and obtain marriage cert..this would certainly narrow it down.
recently a tv showon UK tv "lillies" set c.1920 featured women with similar clothes
hope this may be of some use..got to get me two pence worth in

| | | Re: Help Date this Photo, Please. I think we are all in the ball park so to speak. Attached is a picture of my great grandmother, my grandmother, and her oldest child, who was born in 1917. The dress styles match almost perfectly. I should also note that the very small town where they lived was about 2 years behind in fashion. So if the young ladies in the picture in question lived where fashion was current, that would make a big difference.
