Question Gradient stepping problem

I have a large file (300mb, 75cm high, RGB, B&W, 400dpi) to which I wish to add a gradient to the background from a light grey to a darker grey top to bottom. I am getting colour steps of about 10mm (3/8th") wide down the image. Very subtle but visible. How can I get a smooth gradient without the steps please??
